My Birth Experience

emmysmum by emmysmum Talking Back(March 2008) (rank 25th)

As you all know, I recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. He weighed in at 7lb 10.5 oz.
For many women, experiencing labour is very painful, and to other women who are pregnant for the first time, the thought of dilating 10cm so bubs head can come

out, scares them so much that they have pain relief OTHER than gas.
For me, the thought of dilating 10 cm scared me the first time, so i had an epidural! That made the birth of my daughter a very bad experience. I had my legs in stirrups, got torn very badly, had an episiotomy plus my daughter was delivered with forceps! On top of it all, the epidural wasnt very effective!

This time I decided to be brave and try giving birth the natural way, and used for my option as pain relief if i needed to!
I was still scared of the pain i would feel when the babies head was coming out and the contractions etc.
For me, it was all new.
On the 6th of march, at 8am, I was booked in for an induction of labour. However, my little man decided that he didn't want to be forced out so my contractions started at 4am on the day i was booked in for the induction. By the time my Dr arrived which was at 8 am, i was already 7cm dilated. All that was left was to break my waters! So Doctor broke my waters and then everything started to get more painful BUT not unbearable.
I had a shower and then let nature take its course. I dilated one cm every hr or so and during the last cm i was dilating - i started to use the gas... it was only used for half an hour to an hour and then it was time to push!

Due to me not being able to pin point properly where to push, it took a while for bubs head to come around the bend and pushing time was about 45 min from start to finish!
For me, the last hr of contrations, were more painful than the head coming out and i am one who hates pain and will swear and stuff if i hurt myself..... but i didn't even say one swear word or scream during the whole labour!

I am hoping to reach out to all pregnant women through this advice and all women considering having a baby. Try and go natural with the option of gas as a pain relief. Labour is a good pain and not a bad pain. Your endorphins will kick in and block out the bad pain so you wont feel it....but this will only work while bub is coming out.... I can't guarantee you won't be in pain after bub is out.

I just want to say thankyou to minti member Samantha, who was actually the one who helped me to make the decision to go natural, and if it wasn't so risky for me to go back for more, well i'd probably have another two or three bubs!

Make sure you talk to your doctor or midwife during the labour and also before hand so that you can voice your fears if you have any!

Good luck to all those mums expecting..... and just remember.... labour is a good pain, not a bad pain! But for the precious little gift at the end, the pain is all worth it!

Labour good pain

I am more  scared of drugs than pain! I only had gas for the drs benefit. (Screaming and stitching don't go together).

With my last baby I opted away from drugs hospital and stitches! I thought of the pain as good pain as it was telling me baby was coming and that was assuring.

Re: My Birth Experience

All three of mine have been natural and I fully intend for my fourth to also be natural. My first was by far the scariest and the most painful, but I was adament not to use any drugs, and the fear and pain was mainly due to my young age and no clue about what was happening. It's great that the women of today have such a great choice and variety of birth plans. Thanks for sharing your story!

Re: My Birth Experience

My birth stories are posted in my blog however the first time I went natural after a puff or two on gas which did nothing for me. The next time I had a water birth which was even 100 times better. I've been blessed with relatively easy natural births and agree wholeheartedly with the author.

GO THE WATER BIRTH!

Re: My Birth Experience

Hi there,

What an excellent way of describing it!  I was so against having an epidural for myself - I hated the thought of haviong a needle in my spine.  But after 29 hours of contractions, with them all merging into one non stop contraction towards the end, I had no choice but to give in and have an epidural.  It worked to begin with but only for half hour or so....enough for me to relax enough so I could dilate properly.  After that it only worked on one side of my body so I felt everything anyway.   What I found to work the best was my husband watching the baby monitor and working out when a contraction was about to come on, so I could inhale a big breath of gas before it hit me...... Luckily when it came to push-time, I only had to push for 20 minutes and came out with only mild grazing...no stitches and a beautiful healthy baby!

Within hours of this very long labour I was telling family and friends I wanted to do it again,,,, so yes, it is a good pain and worth every bit of effort.   I will aim to relax a bit more next time so I can dilate properly and not have to get the epidural.  I dont feel guilty for having it though cos it didnt really numb me anyway! LOL

Well done and congrats! he is beautiful!

Re: My Birth Experience

I couldnt agree more - labour pains are GOOD pains - they focus your attention and make sure you dont give up! I had heard all the horror stories from friends on tearing and epidurals and I was determined to avoid that - after all, who wants to be recovering from episiotomies or c-sections (which are more likely after epidurals) when you are trying tolook after a newborn? Ive written up my two labours in the Birth Experiences group. But one thing my MIL said which I focussed on second time round was "every time I thought I couldnt stand it for one more second the pain subsided again" - it was true!

Re: My Birth Experience

Just to add, I found 6 good puffs of entonox gas as I felt the contraction coming worked far better than puffing on it all thru the contraction.

Re: My Birth Experience

Thanks for sharing your story.  I'm glad that you delivered they way you wished and that your birth experience as positive.

With my first daughter I was open minded and hadn't really thought about pain medication during labour but with my second I knew what I wanted.

I had an epidural (after trying gas and pethadine) with my first daughter and was in labour for 10 1/2 hours and I don't remember any pain from her however, with my 2nd daughter she was born in 1 1/2 hours and I had no chance for an epidural as the anethatist was doing a c-section and by the time he was finished Kaitlin was born.

I used gas with Kaitlin but it really doesn't do much but the pain.....well, lets just say that I would opt for an epidural if I could do it all over again but that would be my choice and everyone deserves to give birth the way they want.

Re: My Birth Experience

Thanks for sharing your story Kayla....birth can be so scary for some Mum's and it's good to hear positive stories.

With Zak, my first, I'd been in labour for 16 hours and was only 7 cms dilated with no sleep. The Doctor gave me pethedine to try and help me get a bit of sleep but I just threw it up. So my Doctor advised me to have an epidural just so I could get some sleep and have the energy to push. I have to admit I was very scared but I was so physically exhausted that it was a welcome relief. But having to push him out after the epidural was terrible.

With Luke my labour was 4 hours from start of major pain to the moment I saw him. I was at home for the first hour of pain so by the time I got to hospital I didn't have any pain relief and the labour was so much nicer.

Re: My Birth Experience

Great article Kayla

I had gas and air for all four of mine, however the first and third I did have a bit of pethidine too as I was getting horrendous backpain with it too.

So glad everything went well for you

Re: My Birth Experience

Hi Kayla,

Thanks for the great article.. glad to hear that everything went well with your son's birth :)

Your story sounds similar to mine...
I started getting contractions at about 3pm then gave birth at about 11.45pm....
I actually didn't need to push until 45 minutes before I gave birth either ! haha

I agree with you on the natural birth...
I only had the gas too...

I guess, once you look at your child, all that pain of childbirth disappears...
and it definitely makes it all worth it !

Thanks for sharing your story !!!
Hope you and your family are doing well !!

Love Thuy xox

Re: My Birth Experience

Hi Kayla,

Thanks for sharing your experience with your second time around . . It's amazing how childbirth can be different each time around with some mums. I know myself that it's never been the same, yet a friend of mine who has had 5 bubs can tell you how each labour will go from start to finish as hers have all been the same.

Well done on a great labour and great advice . . .

Cheers Kellz
