SECOND OPINIONS ARE SO IMPORTANT

tassiebiarch by tassiebiarch Talking(March 2008) (rank 500+)

From no sex drive to stage before cancer to a very dangerous blood clot does my life get any better. I will start from my first pregnancy i was a healthy 19 year old fit size 8(geez that would be nice) this pregnancy was a breeze i gave birth 2

a boy 8 pound 9 couldn’t be happy. Then my sex drive vanished i could think of nothing worse than having sex yuk!!!!! This lasted until i had my daughter 4 years later yes 4 years.

Now lets start with the second and my life begins a up hill battle. On a routine checkup being around 15 weeks pregnant i went to the doc. He did my blood pressure etc fine then he decided that he would listen to the baby's heart beat. A heart beat could not be found. Instead of worrying me he decided to do a pap smear. After doing that the baby had moved and he had found the beat thank god so i leave all happy. 3 days later i receive a phone call from my doctor bianca i need to see you its urgent your smear has come back and we need to discuss it. I made an appointment that afternoon. That whole afternoon i felt sick in the stomach because i didn’t no what was wrong? That afternoon i went to the doctors to be told i have cin 3 stage before cancer in my cervix omg i bawled. He referred me to a gyno to examine me and tell me my options. I couldn't get into the gyno for 2 weeks and it was one of the worst 2 weeks of my life. Walking into the gyno i was so scared, mum was with me for support so i soon calmed down. The gyno said that he wanted to take some biopsy’s with no anesthetic as i was pregnant and couldn't have 1 omg did that hurt i screamed and screamed mum was crying for the fact that i was in so much pain more pain than labor. After he took biopsy’s he told me that he had rang some big specialists from royal north shore in sydney and they had told him that the best thing for me at this stage of cancer was to terminate my pregnancy. He thought that the pregnancy hormones would feed the cancer cells (that’s a load of crap it doesn’t but i didn’t no that at that time) my decision was made before he could finish his conversation. I was not terminating my pregnancy and i didn’t i got a second opinion and he told me not to terminate this gyno was the one that told me it was a load of crap about feeding the cancer cells, he had other women who had been thru the same thing and not once did the cells change)) . It turned out that i had a great pregnancy i gave birth to a healthy girl 8 pound 1. after i had her i had my cervix burnt(all abnormal cells were burnt)they had not changed from 9 mths before what a joke imagine if i had decided to have a termination what if i decided that the first gyno was right.

My 3 rd pregnancy well i thought the second was bad this is worse had a great first 35 weeks of pregnancy normal like the rest. I went for a routine check up with midwives and was telling them that i felt very puffed lately i couldn’t walk 200m.they said to me don’t worry its just the baby around you diaphragm i was like ok. I left the appointment and went to my nan’s in tears i said to nan that i was puffed and i couldn’t breath and they told me that it was the baby she said that if i thought it was worse get it checked as i no my own body. She rang the gyno for me and i had an appointment the next day. I went to my appointment the gyno couldn't find anything but sent me to a heart specialist for a check up. Well clear so he decide to send me to a specialist within the hospital to do a dvt(deep vein thrombosis scan) clear then he said to me that he had booked me in for a lung scan at another hospital 1 hour away they wanted me there asap i am like ok not worrying just wanted to get there and sought it out. I got to the hospital and was sent for my scan straight away i was then taken to emergency it took no longer than 10 mins later when i found out i had a blood clot on my lung that i was lucky that they found it as it had started to travel to my brain which we all no means death i was like omg if i hadn't taken it further from the m midwives i would be dead. I owe my life to my nan for making that appointment with the gyno. I had to stay in hosp for the rest of my pregnancy and be on blood thinners for the next 6mths. I had a baby boy 1 week later 6pound 7, 4 weeks early

With telling you all this. So many women believe the first thing that specialists in every area tell them. Please always get a second opinion it is worth it.

By me doing this i had my daughter and i saved myself from death. A lot of women do make the first choice because they think that they are been given the right advice in some cases its right and in others it not.

Re: SECOND OPINIONS ARE SO IMPORTANT

It is great that you shared your experiences as an example that each individual needs to be the first and foremost person responsible for their own medical care.  Not accepting first opinions and gaining further information before making important health decisions is vital to a sensible care regime.  It is especially pertinent when you are pregnant, as it is a time when women feel very vulnerable, and less empowered due to the 'great unknown' during their first pregnancy.

I too found this a little hard on the eyes as it is all in upper case; however the message you convey is very valuable.

Re: SECOND OPINIONS ARE SO IMPORTANT

Hi Bianca,

Thanks for sharing your story . . you are so very right about getting a second opinion! I suffered with a blood clot during my 1st pregnancy and it was my second opinion that saved my life and that of my unborn baby . . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: SECOND OPINIONS ARE SO IMPORTANT

Yes it's always good to have a second opinion on anything.

By the way, would it be possible for you to edit this article as I'm having trouble reading it all in capital letters?
