Bicycle helmets for toddlers

mrscrumley by mrscrumley Talking(August 2006) (rank 327th)
Our family enjoys taking bicycle rides in our neighborhood. Our son is currently 21 months old and even before he got in the child seat of his daddy's bicycle we had introduced him to the bike helmet.

When I was 12 my dad was an avid cyclist. He would
ride his bike in the mornings for exercise. One day he came home from riding and his face was a mess of blood and deep scrapes. He had a bike accident that made him hit the pavement with his face. This was before bicycle helmets were a required piece of safety equipment in bicycle culture. And this story is why my son was introduced to the bicycle helmet before the bicycle.

Some states have made it a law that all children wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. I think it is just common sense. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, helmets can reduce head injuries by 85%.

Getting a proper helmet, one that meets safety standards is important. Make sure the helmet fits properly, not too tight, not too loose, but snug and steady on the top of the head (not pushed back or forward, but flat on the top of the head). And make sure your toddler is comfortable in the helmet and won't pull it off. It took a few tries but Fuller eventually began to equate putting on his helmet with taking a bike ride, so he didn't attempt to pull it off anymore.

There is more to bicycle safety than just the helmet, but getting your toddler used to the idea of that first step of safety will help in the future, when your toddler is no longer a toddler and trying to peddle his or her own trike or bike independently.

Where to get one?
My daughter is 20 months old and I want to get her a helmet.  SHe was born premature so she has a small head.  I have looked everywhere trying to find one that fits, but I have had no luck.  Do you know where I might can find one?   Thanks Alicia

Rules
We have rules with kids such no helmet no bike or on summer time no hat no play. It is good to remind to our kids about the needs or the dangers about things.

Introducing helmet first.

I love your idea of introducing your son to the helmet first and getting him used to it before the bike. I will be sure to do that with my son when the time comes.

My husband's 9 year old nephew just had an ATV accident a few months ago and he didn't have a helmet. He rode as a passenger apparently when the driver hit a bump and he flew off and hit his head. The paramedics were called and he was rushed to the hospital because he couldn't answer simple questions like what the year is, and if he recognized certain people in the room.  He had a minor concussion and is just fine now, but he knows not to ever go riding without a helmet again.

Bike Safety
Excellent advice!  Having worked at a head injury facility many years ago, I saw first hand how a closed head injury could impact a persons quality of life.  I know I couldn't live with myself if my child suffered a serious injury that could have been avoided if they had only used the appropriate safety equipment.  My kids have always worn helmets when biking, blading or riding on their scooters.  I don't even have to remind them to put their gear on as it has just become something that they have to do.  Great post!
