Hi guys – I have found something that I want to share with you ALL. . Sorry if you are not Australian but who knows after reading this you may find something similar in your country or community.
Farm Day has now been running in Australia for a relatively
short time but it has now gone national. The aim of it is to encourage families from the cities to mix with families from the bush for one day! So if you are seeking a GREAT day away from the concrete jungle we call a city, town or suburb then this may be what you need and it’s a great way to spend quality time with your children as well as letting them experience something that they haven’t before!
Just think, no sirens, no tantrums, no Nintendo’s, no computers just a fun day learning about the land, the animals and exchanging stories. . Sounds like bliss to me!
Farm Day is being held this year on May the 24th & 25th.
Farm day offers a hands on experience for you and you children to learn all about farming etc. I think this is a GREAT and fantastic day out for the whole family and what’s even better is that it’s all FREE..
This is a very simple and effective idea; every city family is matched with a country family for a day. As I have said above it is a ‘hands on’ day, what better way to learn about animals and farming than by hands on.
Research commissioned by Landcare in 2006 showed that:
- 41% of urban Australians had not visited a working farm
- 63% of urban Australians have little or no understanding of what really goes on behind the gates of a real farm.
These statistics are shocking, especially for me as I grew up on and off many farms in Tasmania and also New South Wales. Just thinking about how many children have missed out on this experience is staggering. Farm Day goes a long way into changing these statistics for the better..
In 2007 a survey of participants of Farm Day found that:
- 95% said that they learned that farmers really did care for their animals (it shocked me to see that most thought that the animals weren’t really cared for properly)
- 90% said that now they would be making an effort to visit rural communities and farms more often.
- 89% said that they had gained a great understanding of the role that our farmers have in their daily lives (eg. Meat, milk, eggs, flour etc etc)
- 88% were shocked to learn that most farmers were committed to the enhancing and protecting of our environment.
- 86% said that they would buy more Australian made products
- 95% of the families reported that their day was extremely or very enjoyable
- 98% also reported that they would recommend farm day to anybody!
Farm day interests me greatly because of the hands on approach; the idea of my children being able to help to feed the animals and help with some daily farming chores is great. This experience I believe would help my children to grow and to learn and also to respect other people.
For those of you interested in joining in on Farm Day please follow this link and register TODAY. Come on mums and dads lets get out there and spend a fun and educational day out with our kids. This day is open to all families of all cultures and ages.
I know I am looking forward to a FREE and FUN day with my family and hopefully making friends with another family. They may even be a new pen-friend opportunity which is great for me and also my children.
Cheers Kellz
