tired signs

Question:

Over 6 years in fact since I had a 2 week old baby, and some things are easily forgotten.

How many hours does a 2-4 week old old baby normally stay awake

for in an average 24 hours period?

It seems my little man is suffering from insomnia as badly as me lately! LOL Probably just a change in his routine and he hasn't fully established what the new one is going to be yet, and I haven't adjusted and figured it out myself, but I'm starting to miss the old baby sleeping for 4 hours between every feed routine.

My Advice:

I have a 7 week old baby, who i had 8 years after my last and i sooned realised how much i had forgotten, here's the advice i was recently given:

1 Week old babies require 16 and a half hours sleep in a 24 hour period, 4 week old babies require 15 and a half.  Generally a 2 week old baby will not yet have established a routine. A new baby will be ready for sleep after being awake for about an hour - watch for his tired signs such as clenched fists, frowning, yawning, hiccups, jerky arm and leg movements and the need to suck, if you notice these wrap him (if you normally do) and put him to bed, make sure the room is quiet and dark with no distractions.

My baby was waking every 2 hours, and thinking he was hungry i would feed him but it turned out he was just going through a sleep cycle and only needed resettling, after resettling he would then sleep for another hour or so.

Hope this helps and good luck

Re: tired signs

i knew my daughter was tired cuz she always got really whingy, clenched her fists, yawned and was generally a pain in the butt (not a lot has changed).  I just fed her, rocked her to sleep and put her in the cot.  I never made it quiet, i always had the tv going, and did the vacuming or dishes etc.... now she's 10 months old and will sleep thru anything (we have parties a fair bit and go out a lot), and noise doesn't bother her.
