My Advice:

I worked for a company once as a "telemarketer" for a short while and I would advise that if you do not want to receive continuous calls from telemarketers it is very unlikely that playing pranks on them will work - although ti may seem funny at the time, it won't seem so funny when they continue to ring you every day!

If you want to avoid these annoying calls I suggest:

If in Australia, register your home phone and mobile numbers on the DO NOT CALL REGISTER - www.donotcall.gov.au

NOTE- you can only list private numbers, it may take up to 30 days for it to take effect and you may still receive calls from some organisations operating in the public interest who are exempt from prohibition on making telemarketing calls. You can also still receive calls from market researchers AND if you have given a business consent to call you - including if you have an existing relationship with that company, you have agreed to the fine print without realising OR you may have even entered a survey or competition form (now you wish you had read all those terms and conditions don't you!!)

So...if you don't want calls from numerous companies - list your number as a private number so it is not readily available and be aware of who you give your phone number to - including competitions entry froms (entry may be free but some times there is a catch)

I can't stand listening to a telemarketer or even a customer service agent who doesn't speak clear understandable English.  But this doesn't always mean that they are calling from overseas - we have plenty of people within Australia with accents - why they get employment as phone operators I don't know!!

However, just remember that person is doing a job and sometimes it is a ligitimate reason they are calling.  Make sure they get to the point quickly and then give them the real reason you are not interested - they have a drop down menu on their screen of reasons you are not interested, they cna then pick the appropirate one and THEN remove you from their list.  If you get your kids to say you're not home right now...guess what?  They will try calling you again until they DO get hold of you and get a "YES" or a "NO".

Hope this inside information helps avoid some frustation!

Re: HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY AVOID TELEMARKETING CALLS

Hi,

Like most other mums I can't stand telemarketers . . I was on the Do Not Call registry but when I moved I forgot to change my address . .  Thanks for this as I have now re-registered and have been call free for 1 whole day. which is a miracle in itself . . One of the most annoying thing is when one of the kids answer the phone, some of these telemarketers prey on their little minds which is disgusting!

cheers Kellz

What was especially worrying was when kids would say that Mum and Dad weren't home - i had htat child's full address usually not just their phone number- dangerous if they are home alone.Best not to let your kids answer the phone!

Re: HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY AVOID TELEMARKETING CALLS

I think the worst telemarketers are from Accor - the hotel membership club group. You tell them nicely you aren't interested yet they still persist. I told him I wasn't interested after he gave me his spiel, and said goodbye. He said bye too, so I hung up. But then he rang again straight away to try and convince me to join with them! Like he had more to say! He was like, "come on it's so great why don't you want it?" lol So I hung up on him again.

Re: HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY AVOID TELEMARKETING CALLS

i hate the calls where they say " your number has been selected to win ********** all u have to do is **********" i hang up on them. and lately we get them call and hang up cause their previous call hasnt finished. it drives me mad. i refuse to get a private number, i dont feel the need for it. i like the Questionair ones as i like to feel that i am helping someone.

oh and as soon as i hear a foren accent i hang up, but i say sorry not interested first
