Children writting there name!

Amerlinwinga by Amerlinwinga Talking(April 2008) (rank 105th)

Writting your name is a stepping stone from being our little babies to our little adults. Every child is different my niece was 3yo when she could write her name and my child at 3 had no sign of doing so.  My oldest is 4 very soon and wants to

write her name but just cant seen to get it.

I will be putting activities on her table now so she can learn on how to write her name. So i gave her sheets where she can follow the broken line to form her name..... I realised she couldnt follow that because we have never done dot to dot lol. So what i have reaslise is that i need to show her how to do this.... She cant read numbers so i have made up colour and shape ones so she gets the idea how they join together.

I have also got tracing paper for her to trace her name but this will have to come after learning how to draw straight lines and curved ones ect.  I have done some reading on this and there are a few step to o before getting to this stage. In order for any child to write meaningfully.

In order for any child to write meaningfully, he or she must first build up their fine motor skills. Art projects, working with play dough, measuring and pouring sand and water, and practicing writing are excellent ways to improve fine motor skills.

Scribbling with crayons or pencil and textas.  Making sure that there is always paper on hand so they can draw anytime they like. Encourage them to write and draw.

Making circles and other basic shapes. Be positive and encourage them to draw and discuss there drawing of the shape, Having stencils will help and point out the shape and draw it together and then encourage them to try to do it themselves. Never be negative as they are more than likely never want to do it again. I personally found that she was ready when she started to draw stick figure people.

Well im in the process of showing her how to write her name and she is responding very well,  but all i can say is you will know when your child is ready and i found that there isnt a race to teach them,  because at the end of the day , it wont make them be any smarter that the child that couldnt do until they where 6.

Re: Children writting there name!

Aha, good advice, we are getting up to this stage.  MicroMe is just getting the hang of drawing smiley faces, he has been practicing circles, as he does great straight lines (lots and lots of them...).  I figure that once he can do lines and circles, he will be able to start on tracing letters.  (He also likes to draw my red boots for some reason - oddly enough, when he draws them, they look like a 'J' so we are off and running ; )  There (sp) got my attention, so it worked LOL chickee : )

Re: Children writting there name!

I found teaching my son his colors , to count , to write his name and all other preliminary things were best done in a fun , in a we are not learning kind of way. When a child is that young there is no way to make them sit and learn lol. He would say look mommy a car , and my response would be " yes , a red car" We also always counted the stairs when going up for a bath or coming down. When he was 1 turning 2 yrs old, I was teaching him that he was going to be two. So he was having a bath and we were counting rubber duckys. I would say " 1 duck , 2 ducks , skylier is going to be 2!" So on his birthday he was asked how old he was and he was so excited when he yelled " IM TWO DUCKS!"

We also taught him his phone number nd address at age 2 by singing it! It made me feel much better knowing that if for any reason he ever got lost he could tell a policeman his phone number and address as well as mommy and daddy's "real" names.

Re: Children writting there name!

Making it fun is a good point that i didnt say but is so true! Just like everything if its boring and being forced the child wont enjoy learning at a young age.  You had some great ideas as well , and thanx for sharing as i think life and people methods can help alot of others. Teaching your son his name and address was very clever and maybe some can also give this a try!

Thanks heaps hunny!
