Hi Guys - Wow being a woman can and is sometimes hard BUT I think it also comes with its rewards. . I mean, look; we all go through that once a month drag and some of us moan while others joke about men not going through it
. . . But when push comes to shove – Do we really want to give our periods up? It’s because of our period that we have the pleasure of having children and I don’t know about the rest of you but I wouldn’t trade that in for anything.
Then there are the sore boobs, the weight problems, the aches, the pains, the moans and the groans – Now these I could happily pass on. . hehe . .
Ooops and lets not forget the women’s checks that we all have to go through – I’d pay to see a male survive one of those. . But lets not forget ladies, men too have their own health checks and to be honest I certainly wouldn’t want to go down that road.
Now on a more serious note I have been wondering just many of you ladies out there were aware of just what sort of tests etc they should have on a regular basis . . . So I thought I’d compile a list. I wonder how many of us can answer yes to them all!
~Bowel cancer~
- The test for Bowel Cancer should be had by ALL over the age of 50. This test should also be preformed on all people at increased risk of colorectal cancer, for example because of family history
- If you are over 50 then this test should be repeated every 2 years and every 5 years for others.
~Breast Cancer~
For women out there with no symptoms who may be at average risk of breast cancer, the Cancer Council of Australia says: “Be Breast Aware”. This is done familiarising yourself with the normal look and feel of your breasts. See a doctor immediately if you notice any unusual breast changes.
Self-examination reduces deaths from breast cancer across the population. This can be done whenever you feel is the right time for yourself. Usually once a week is enough and most women tend to do this while they are in the shower or lying flat on their beds.
- Women that are at high risk of breast cancer should discuss their screening options with their doctor. Some options include: Annual (yearly) mammograms, Breast ultrasounds and regular clinical breast examination by a doctor
- All women that aged over 40 have free access to Breast Screen should they choose to have a mammogram. Women over 70 years may continue to have free mammograms, but should discuss with their doctor
- Women aged 50 to 69 years of age are advised that it is beast to have a medical breast examination by their doctor every 2 years.

~Cervical cancer~
Please refer to this link on pap smears
~Coronary artery disease~
- All people at high risk of cardiovascular disease should see their doctor for a test at least every 12 months
- People aged 45 and older should see their doctor for a check-up every 5 years
- Adults less than 45 years who are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease because of other risk factors (other than a high cholesterol result) should see their doctor 'Regularly' for check-ups
~Dental health~
If you are having no problems then you should see your dentist at least once every 12 months for a check-up.
~Diabetes: type 2~
This is a very important check that many people ignore altogether and shouldn’t.
If you are a person with Impaired Glucose Tolerance or impaired fasting glucose then it is recommended that you have a “fasting blood sugar level test” done every 12 months
If you are over 40 then you should have a test done at your doctors every 12 months
If you are:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples 35 years and over
- Pacific Islander people, people from the Indian Subcontinent or of Chinese origin
- People aged 45 and over who have either or both of: (a) obesity or (b) high blood pressure
- People who have had myocardial infarction (heart attack), angina or stroke
- Women with polycystic ovary syndrome who are obese
THEN it is recommended that you have a Fasting blood sugar level test done every 3 years. REMEMBER that Diabetes type 2 is NO joke!
~Glaucoma~
Everybody should have their first eye check at 40, unless they have risk factors for glaucoma, in which case they should have their first eye check at 35. Some Risk factors include:
- Family history of glaucoma
- Diabetes
- Migraine
- Short sightedness (myopia)
- Eye injuries
- High blood pressure
- Past or present use of steroids
~Skin cancer – melanoma~
Everybody should check themselves for melanoma at home at least every three months. You know your own body and what marks etc are normal and which ones have changed. However if you are at high risk then your doctor should do this every 6-12 months along with you still doing it yourself. Those at high risk may be:
- People with multiple atypical or dysplastic naevi (moles with unusual appearance)
- People who have a history of melanoma themselves or in very close relative
~Vascular disease, such as heart attack and stroke~
This should be checked by everyone who is 18 years and over. This is checked by a simple blood pressure test and your doctor’s office and it could very well save your life. This test should be done every 2 years if normal. More frequently if you have risk factors for vascular disease and high blood pressure, such as smoking, age over 50 years, or high cholesterol.
~Visual impairment~
- For people 50 years and over you should have your eyes checked every 3 years.
- For people over 65 it should be done every 12 months
I myself go for an eye check every 2 yrs and my children for every 12months
I hope this reminds us ALL . . . Taking care of our health is so very important and many women simply don’t as they are too concerned about those around them.
PLEASE I urge EVERY woman on Minti to get checked!
Be safe and be here tomorrow
Thanks for taking the time to read this . .
