How to get enough iron? (Tips)

I am vegetarian and I have trouble getting enough calcium, protein and iron in my diet. Rather than taking numerous tablets I would like to eat! Here are some foods that I think help my iron levels in my experience:

  • iron fortified cereals, foods and drinks
  • sesame seeds
  • leafy vegetables such as spinach
  • nuts especially cashews
  • dried fruits such as apricot
  • orange juice with a feed helps to absorb the iron
  • avoid calcium and caffeine as they inhibit the absorbing of iron

I love that you addressed the "helper" foods, that help with absorbtion! These are so often ignored, and so many vitamins and minerals are useless without them! It's always a good idea to take supplements and multivitamins on a full stomach for this reason.

Also, of these lists, the cereal with iron fortified has by far the most iron, up to 5 times as much as anything else on the list.

Here are some more iron rich foods:
Cream of Wheat
Molasses
Clams or oysters for those who will eat seafood
Baked potato with skin
Watermelon

These still have iron but less:
Brown rice
Wheat germ
Oatmeal
Sunflower seeds
Soy milk
Beans and peas
Tofu
Other soy
Beets
Broccoli
Green  beans

this is a topic that really needs to be addressed with vegetarians and vegans alike. and some of us that jsut dont' like to eat meat because they dont want to chew it ...

my husband is studying to be a personal trainer and we (and i mean WE!) had to learn all about this stuff. anothet good one especially for vegans is a fortified soy drink, especially as vegans dont use milk, it is really dangerous for their bones as they are more prone to osteoporosis and children brought up to be vegan can have terrible long term effects on theri bones (inparticlar the legs and hips!) if they dont receive enough calcium. calcium is constantly taken from bones and teeth when their isnt enough in the body, and then replaced when there is excess. if there is never an excess and a lot of depletion occurs it can lead to brittle bones that will just wear out to nothing through plain old usage!
