night toilet training

rissa1112 by rissa1112 Speaking(April 2008) (rank 500+)

my friend had a lot of troube toilet training her daughter and i had my son toilet trained of a night in 5 nights i know you are probably thinking i am lying but it worked some thins i did were

  • stop all drinks 2 hrs before bed
(i know it sounds mean only give a sip when they want a drink)
  • remind them that they cant wet the bad and they have undies on
  • make the bed so that it is layered plastic , normal, plastis, normal sheets then if they wet pull off the top sheet and plastic sheet and put a blanket over them it saves making beds at 2am
  • when you go to bed wake them up and tell them to go to the toilet  my son used to cry but he went to the toilet even though he was asleep on the loo
  • also alot of praise dont get mad when they wet the bed tell them they should have used the toilet and just change the bed

i hope this helps i am not an expert but it helped me and my friend eventually they will realise that they are wetting the bed and stop good luck

ps    juat a tip under the sheet but on the plastic i used to lay an old towl as when he wet it some tims ran off the bed as there was nothing to soak it up

Re: night toilet training

All my kids were night dry around the same time they gave up nappies during the day. Though with my eldest son, he would cry at night, So would take him to the toilet half a sleep as you mentioned.

Good ideas.

Re: night toilet training

I like the plastic/sheet layering idea!

My DD1 was dry for over a year during the day before she was ready at night. I did a big build-up towards the summer and was saying "you're getting too big for nappies at night now; shall we give it a go without the nappy when the weathers nice and I can dry the sheets quickly" when she decided to dispense with the nappy in the spring LOL! (This is the child who was trying to potty train all summer and got the hang of it in January the week she began Preschool!)

BECAUSE she  had chosen to do it, it worked (my DD1 is like that with most things). In fact, her nappy used to leak about 3 mornings a week before she went dry at night. The first night she was dry til 4am. During the next week, she sometimes woke and wet before she remembered there was no nappy. The wetting always happened in the hour before she woke up for the day, confirming my suspicions that she was a lazy tike who used to use the nappy as she woke in the morning rather than crawl from her warm bed to visit the cold toilet! We bought several special waterproof mats which can be quickly whipped out from under her and replaced with another one if an accident happens - in fact, because of nappy failure, she was quite used to using them already.

The night training proved a lot easier than I had expected, which I know is not everyones experience. But for me, I know that steering my DD1 towards making her own decision to do things (rather than imposing things from on high) makes changes work far better. And I had a lot fewer washes to do in the weeks following night training than I had been having in the weeks before it!

Re: night toilet training

I did this with my oldest.......he stayed dry all night but he would still wet his bed if we forgot to wake him up before we went to bed, until he was 6 yrs old. Where as my 3 1/2 yr old who will have huge drinks before bed stays dry all night.......

Re: night toilet training

Hi there, good advice, I did similar but the problem I had was once I decided she was past being woken to go to the toilet when I went to bed she reverted to wetting the bed for a couple of nights.  After that though it was smooth sailing.
