No such thing as too much milk

Re: IS TO MUCH MILK BAD
Asked by lisam

Question:

Can any-one tell me can you give to much milk to your children. My little hannah is 11months old, she has milk now during the day and still threw the night.

As I worked last night to get sleep I just give in and gave her bottle she would have bottle and straight back to sleep. But she had four at 250mls.

My Advice:

Hey Lisam, don't stress too much, all kids are different. My little boy is 20 months old now and every once in a while he may wake during the night for some comfort, which is all your little girl wants. Giving water at night is a great option and it's a trick I myself used.

My boy Taylor eats 3 big meals (big for a toddler) as well as snacks, he then has 1-2 bottles of milk at nap time in the middle of the day and again at night to go to bed. It's kind of like using a dummy, the only difference is that I fill the bottle completely which is about 250-300mls a go (so the same as Hannah but he is 9 months older then her). It doesn't interfere with eating during the day but helps settle him at sleep time. Mind you he has a 4 hour nap during the day and about 12 straight hours at night.

If a baby has too much she will just bring it back up again, so as long as she is still eating and able to keep it all down don't worry. Do what you need to do to get sleep, without your sleep you will struggle to keep up with her.

Hannah is almost old enough to have just cows milk, I started Taylor early as he drank so much it was just too expensive to continue with the formula. If you are worried about the amount of fat she is getting from the full cream cows milk then substitute every second bottle with skim milk or fill her bottle half half. Though at this age it's the last thing you need to worry about. Kids need all the extra fat they can get because once she starts walking and running around she is going to burn through it like there is no tomorrow.

Hope this helps

Thanks for sharing! Just wanna add that you cant give kids under 5yo skim milk as it will make them sick and there is no benefit. If you are worried about the fat intake you are better of reverting back to basics like wen you first start them of on cows milk. Which is 50% full cream milk amd 50% water. That is what i had been told by doctor and health nurse as my youngest drank alot of milk and was a little fatty! And a well balanced diet would work well as well!.

Re: No such thing as too much milk

Too much milk is a big problem. Kids who consume too much milk don't consume enough other foods to provide their daily intake of essential nutrients. milk has lots of good vitamins and minerals but not all that a body needs. It's one of the biggest causes of picky eating in toddlers.

Under 12mths a baby should still be having breastmilk or formula as their main milk source. Cows milk does not contain the essential fatty acids and other essentials a baby needs to develop properly. Occasionally for medical reasons a baby may go onto cows milk under 12mths but this should be done under medical supervision and the child will be prescribed additional vitamins and mineral supplements. Introducing cows milk too early also increases the risk of allergies and intolerances to dairy. Cows milk anemia is a big problem for babies and a leading source of infant mortality. It is caused by giving cows milk as a main milk drink. For those who can't breastfeed formula is a godsend for babies as it gives them the nutrients they need to survive.

Children under 2 shouldn't be given skim or lite milk as a main milk drink. They need the fat in full cream milk for brain development. It's not going to kill them to have skim (like if you've run out of full cream and there's nothing else on day) but if they need the essentials in full cream milk.

Re: No such thing as too much milk

I have always been pretty relaxed where my kids eating was concerned. I would be even greyer if I worried that they were not eating/drinking right. My gp backed me up by saying that whatever milk they can drink is fine providing it is given after meals once they have begun solids or else they may not eat enough actual food. As for the night time routine, i would maybe offer water and see if that is taken otherwise you have to weigh up the pros and cons. If u want a good night sleep without the battles, then offer milk, if you want this saga to end then offer nothing but cuddles or maybe try the control crying. The choice is yours. But definately no skim milk..it is basically milk with no fat, not taste and mainly watered down..no nourishment really...oops, realised I just answered the original question and not really replied to your advice article..lol

Re: No such thing as too much milk

Children need the fats from full-cream milk when they are little as Mony points out. And there is a point in time where too much milk can have a negative influence on the child's appetite and they can become malnourished from lack of nutrients if they have too much milk and fill their bellies to the point where they don't want food. I had to stop my boy drinking milk but for one glass before bed and with his breakfast cereal or he just wouldn't eat enough food and it was effecting his health.

Re: No such thing as too much milk

Great advice, however I wouldnt reccommend giving a child under age 5 skim milk as it can make them sick.

See here and here for more information.

Re: No such thing as too much milk

hi, i've never heard of skim milk making kids sick, it's good to know. My son has skim milk sometimes and has never had a problem. Ah well, all kids are different aren't they I guess.
