Whats with the attack on binge drinking kids / teens??!!

hopperskincare by hopperskincare Walking(April 2008) (rank 463rd)

I know i know, kids drinking alcohol (yes even teenagers) is a bad thing. I totally agree. But come on!! What is happening now is no different to what has happened for generations before us. Kids rebel, but the thing is, WE TEACH OUR KIDS HOW TO REBEL!!

Look

at our society. Work commitments (as well as family) means that during the week it is not sensible to drink, at least not in large quantities. So come the weekend we are able to let our hair down. Well I wonder, than, where then kids got that idea from then huh? look at us, fri and sat night comes around and adults go out, have fun, have drinks and quite often have too much. Our kids copy us because they think it's normal. Not only that but have we really looked at our lives today? they are very stressful, even for kids. What children, toddlers through to teenagers have to do at school is huge. The work gets harder every year, there is more to learn, more ways to do it, more tests, higher standards etc etc etc and on top of that there is the expected social side of life. Kids are not immune to this as we have all seen on the news from time to time. Bullies, the stress of school, social and sporting activities. It's a surprise that they even have time to brush their teeth in the morning before going to school. No wonder they try to escape reality with alcohol. Adults do it enough.

If we want our kids not to drink (binge drink) than we need to change a few things, starting with ourselves.

Also, for under age drinkers, one has to wonder how they are getting the alcohol in the first place.

We should look at the quantities that drinks come in as well as the strength.

We definately need to change the laws surrounding underage drinking if what I was told the other day is true. (please correct me if wrong as I would really like to know)

I asked a few days ago I asked my husband why it was that the drunk under aged kids I saw on the news that were being sheepherded  away from a party  were not being arrested? After all, isn't under age drinking illegal?  He told me that they can't do anything but call their parents to come and get them.  Soooooo what do you mean? Any kid under 18 who drinks in public can do so freely without any hinderance from police!!???? that's just stupid!!! Why should they fear the law if the law can't touch them. No wonder kids get away with everything.

So what do you all think???

Re: Whats with the attack on binge drinking kids / teens??!!

The advice here is that adults should be responsible role models for their underage children.

Actually, I'm a little curious - in places like the USA binge drinking is a huge problem. When American international students come to Australia they're pretty famous for having wild parties or owning the "party flat" at student housing because in Australia our age limit it 18 not 21. Not saying that Americans are the only one with the binge drinking problem, as I know Australians too have this problem - it's just an example.

But in places where there is no age limit, people seem to be much better behaved or have a better attitude to alcohol.

Is binge drinking caused by a particular society's or cultural attitude towards alcohol?

I think you've raised an interesting topic but I'm not sure where the advice is in here.

I think you've raised the issue of the problems, but I can't see that you've given any cohesive suggestions on how they might be resolved.
