Safety in the home - choking hazards. |

Safety in the home is very important especially once your little one starts to become mobile. My youngest is now 9mths and crawls from the loungeroom to the kitchen and he is quick as lightning.
It is at this age that I find babies like to pick up tiny
things off the floor and mouth them. For this reason I have told my older kids they aren't allowed to play with small toys. I worry that my baby might choke.
I am weary to only buy toys that are suitable for my baby to play with. Tiny toys have been put away and only come out periodically eg. when baby is not up and about (he is napping) My older kids sometimes think this is unfair but I think it is more fair on my baby for him to play with appropriate toys.
A good rule of thumb is if it fits in a film canister (remember them,?!) it is too small. Also be weary of buttons on clothing that may come loose.
Another consideration is at feeding time. Food should be of the right consistency for their age. Hard foods that can be lodged in the throat such as apple and carrot are best not be given until they are older. Also young children need supervision when eating, so I never leave my baby to eat on his own.
