Approaching halfway, at 19 weeks, the fetus measures 16cm from crown (head) to rump (bottom). The placenta has finished forming and is working constantly to nourish your growing baby and rid waste. Your baby now weighs 320grams, which is only a percentage of the weight you may have gained.
You should be able to feel flutters, some movement of the baby. For me, I notice the movement more in the evening. This may be due to quiet time when I am at my most relaxed. (Unless of course my youngest child chooses to fight bedtime...) I have felt flips and little kicks. My husband only felt the movement by chance as he had his arm on the side of my belly. If I rub my belly, the baby may choose to react.
You may notice swelling in your hands and feet. This is normal in pregnancy and relates to blood pressure. Take a rest during the day and avoid standing for long periods.
Another less than pleasant side effect of pregnancy is headaches and dizziness. I have experienced a few headaches but they haven't been to much of a worry. Take care when standing up and try to eat well. This may help with feeling faint or dizzy.
While we are talking about eating, a requirement that you will be in more need of, especially as you head into 3rd trimester is calcium. This helps to build up the baby's bones and teeth. If the baby takes from your stores, you may experience toothaches and sore bones. I had this especially in my second pregnancy and to a lesser degree in my third. Ensure you are getting plenty of calcium in your diet or take a supplement. Toothaches are no fun especially when you need all the sleep you can get. I was actually very tired when going into labour with my second child due to teeth problems.
Calcium rich foods include
- dairy foods such as milk, yogurt, cheese (harder cheeses have more calcium than cottage cheese for example)
- legumes and nuts such as almonds
- dried fruits
- green leafy vegetables
You can also get an abundance of foods which are calcium enriched such as cereals, breads and juice.
I am enjoying this pregnancy! (Yes I am surprised!)
