Labour and Pain Relief, its your choice - Common Drug free options

Anonymous Author (April 2008)

Before your Labour, its nice to weigh out your options of pain relief.

Whether you would like to go Drug free or have the Option of using drugs, I have made a list of options through two pieces of advice for you to read.

This piece of advice

focus's on DRUG FREE.

enjoy :)

Breathing Technique:

This is usually taught in birthing classes, In labour, you want to keep your breathing rhythmical, breathing in, small pause, then breathing out, making the 'out-breath' a little longer than the 'in-breath'. This technique is also used to help against panic attacks and relieve stress.

Massage:

Well, you know how any massage makes you feel (when you are lucky enough to receive them lol!), thats your endorphins kicking in, endorphins make you feel good, which is why it is used widely as another drug free pain relief option, having your birth-partner massage you in the lower back is excellent pain relief as many feel the labour in their backs. Its best to use massage lotions or oils, if you are interested in using essential oils, it would be best to speak to your doctor, there are aromatherapy massage oils available on the market.

TENS machines - Trans-cutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation:

This little machine works for some, not for others. Hospitals dont usually provide them but you can buy or hire them from chemists.

This is usually a small battery operated machine with four wires coming out of it with round sticky pads attached to the other end of the wires, They generate pulses of electricity to the muscles that the sticky pads are stuck to. They are usually placed on the back on either sides of the spine, 2 at bra strap level and 2 just above the buttocks. The pulses of electricity helps prevent the pain from your cervix working its way up your spine and to the brain.

Aromatherapy:

Alot of people use aromatherapy recipes to help with all kinds of things in life from colds and flu's to intimacy, essential oils are usually placed on an oil burner with a tealight candle placed underneath warming the oil to fill the room with its aroma. Some essential oils that help are Lavender, Rose, Sage and Neroli. Please consult your midwife or an aromatherapist for recipe details as they can vary through the stages of childbirth.

Sterile water injections:

Tiny little ammounts of water are injected in the skin (not under) in four places in the lower back to block pain receptors, there are no side effects to you or the baby and usually there are great results, the pain relief can last up to 90 minutes and can be administered again if needed. Downside is that it can be quite painful, its sting can be quite harsh and unbearable for about 30 seconds.

thanks for reading, i hope this helps widen your pain relief options!

Birthing in water is what I want to try this time. Shower worked very well in my first labour.

Re: Labour and Pain Relief, its your choice - Common Drug free options

I loved my tens machine! I hired one from the NHS first time round, but they're like hens teeth so I hired one online the second time and it arrived in the post rather than having to go to the hospital and pay a fortune to park while I waddled to get it LOL! With DD1 I started low with the TENS machine while I was at home, an it helped a little on the long drive to hospital, but then when they suggested a bath I had to take it off, which was like taking my comfort blanket away! By the end of the labour I had gradually cranked it up, but I had only reached 9/10. I didnt feel the need to put on the TENS machine until the last hour with DD2, but it definitely helped again. Dont remember what number I got up to that time. Well worth a try, unless you want a waterbirth! Which reminds me, water is a natural pain relief too, so I understand.

Re: Labour and Pain Relief, its your choice - Drug free options

Hi Channy,

Thanks for a GREAT article . .  BUT just a little warning about TENS machines  . DO NOT use them unless you are actually in labour.  . . I used mine to try and help with my back pain towards the end of my pregnancy and it sent me into early labour . . Luckily my labour was stopped and the Dr's told me NOT to use the TENS machine until I was already in Labour .  .

Cheers Kellz

Re: Labour and Pain Relief, its your choice - Drug free options

I used hypnosis to control my labor pains.

I was recommended by my midwife to a local GP who specialised in women's health. I went when I was about 6 months pregnant.

I had three appointments in total. One first was a get to know you (likes and dislikes), the second one  was a practice one and the third was making a tape to listen to.

I listen to the tape every week for 2 months then I increased to two times a week and then finally every day in the lead up and preparation of the birth itself.

For me it worked, but I know it's not every ones cup of tea.

Great article!

No problems

After years of IVF I wanted a natural birth so hypnosis seemed the logical choice for me. My husband said anything after 8/10 hours and  he would be asking for the drugs for me - even though this is not what I wanted (men).
