This Easter I weighted my 14 year olds school bag and was amazed to find out that it weighed 19kg (she weighs 45kg) After taking advice and doing some research I bought a School Bag from www.ergonomicschoolbags.co.uk I got very good advice from the company and we have
brought my daughters school bag down to a safe weight; no more than 15 percent of her total body weight.
These school bags are very padded and have a system that stops them hanging off the back. All the weight is distributed across the strongest muscles and so there is no pressure on the neck and shoulder muscles and the spine. They are beautifully made and look good and are built to last. My daughter doesn't lean forward anymore and she says it feels very light and comfy.
Parents need to be warned of the dangers of not using a back pack correctly, some children are now using bags on wheels and according to my chiropractor this causes misalignment as the child leans and pulls. The safest school bag is a good supportive back pack and I cannot recommend this company enough. On Sunday I opened the Sunday Mail to see it there as no 1 in the five best school bags.
We as parents need to pressure the schools into providing adequate locker space and ban unsuitable bags for example 'messenger bags' because they are purely a fashion statement and they cause bad posture and back problems. Young spines need protecting and my advice to parents is to make sure that they choose a really good school bag, weigh your childs bag regularly and contact the school if you are concerned. There has been a thirty percent increase in children with back pain over the last ten years.
