Advise to get your kids reading at an early age

jorymom by jorymom Walking(April 2008) (rank 500+)

I am a mom of two kids on of them is 4yrs old the other 3months. I am getting my college degree in Early Childhood Development. I have some advise for those parents who may want to get your kids reading and speaking well at an early age or at

the very least get them familiar with words and prepare them for kindergarten.

The teaching strategy is called alphabet activities. This is as you guessed getting kids familiar with the alphabet. The alphabet song is good start because it rhymes, but to go further try to use words that are personal to the children. Spell out their friend’s names: "Ryan and Robby both start with what letter? That is correct R very good" Go for a walk and point out things in your neighborhood and sound the object out for your child: T R E E, "what letter makes Tah sound, Rrr sound, Eee sound".... and so on

The other teaching strategy is called rich teacher talk. It is very simple use big words around your child. At 21/2 my daughter could use the word amazing in a sentence. Use words your child may not here everyday. A good way to encourage a child’s use of rich words is to read the news paper to him/her and explain the meaning of the unfamiliar words. Do not expect you child to catch on right away but in time he will.

These are two simple way to enlarge your child’s knowledge and make her better prepared for school.

Re: Advise to get your kids reading at an early age

Good advice!

I used to sing the Alphabet Song to DD1 when she was in the bath (and had an alphabet bath jigsaw) and was amazed when she was about 3 and sang it back at me! DD2 already loves us to sing it to her.

DD1 has been learning to read at school and it is so funny because without trying to do your first idea, DD2 has observed big sis doing it and now pretends to do it herself. So far she definitely recognises O but I think she's getting there with M, S & E and a few others, plus some numbers (she 25 months).

When it comes to Rich Teacher Talk, I'm afraid we used that mixed in with spelling out words to confuse DD1 for as long as possible, ie when discussing pudding, it was "do you fancy Y-O-G or I-C-E-C-R-E-A-M" or "frozen dairy product or gone off dairy extract". I guess she was still exposed to the words, but she had to work out what they meant herself LOL!

Just to add, I know several boys who could count long before they could read, because they were Thomas the Tank Engine fans. So if your child starts telling you "that's James' number", go with the flow!

good idea.

it is hard to get kids into reading. and teaching them can be a pain too. i am lucky most of my hubbys family are all teachers so they helped me alot with the sounds that they teach and the font they use as here in perth they use a certian font and the teachers get shirty if we teach them other stuff

Thanks for sharing this advice, the two ways you spoke of are excellent ways to teach the young to read and speak better at an earlier age.

Cheers Janice

Re: Advise to get your kids reading at an early age

Excellent advice.  I also used magnetic letters on my refrigerator.  Each time my children would walk past they would grab a letter and I would tell them what letter it was.  Eventually, they were grabbing them and telling me what the letters were.  I also did this with my granddaughter.  She is now an avid reader.  She is in the third grade but is reading at a seventh grade level.
