When theres never enough money.

Crystalee by Crystalee Speaking(April 25th) (rank 462nd)

Hey there all you beautiful people. I would like to pass along something I feel is very close to my heart. It helped me more than any information I have ever recieved in my life and your reading it, may also help you.

It about when there never seems to be enough money to spread around to everyone holding thier hands. I want you to put every bill into a small container and make a label for the outside on what it is no matter how big or small. Then I want you to write down how much your total income is for that month. This is before anything is taken out. Now you have an idea of where to start, pay the rent first, this Budget can be done weekly, every two weeks or monthly. BUT YOU MUST STICK TO IT NO MATTER WHAT. Then work out how much your average electricity bill is and divide it by 12 (if you get bill every 3 months) Say if its $300, then divide that by 12 and the weekly amount you will need to put to one side is $25. Then do same for Gas, Oil, Day care, etc....etc. Now you have all these little Boxes with labels on them, that each week you put some money into each one of them. Do the same thing for Pharmacy, running cost of motor car, school lunches, trips out, take away treats, entertainment, food allowance. You will probably find that there is still not enough money to spread around. Now heres is where you have to 'Get real, or Get serious." about commitment to a BUdget. Ask yourself the RIGHT questions when it comes to working out what is really important for the here and now. Is that much really necessary for Entertainment? No, then cut it out all together. There are heaps of things you can do as a family that involve mostly time and little cost. Look at the Food cupboards and ask yourself another 'Right question" Is this item a need or want? if its a want then cut it off the list. Is it really necessary for my child to buy his/her lunch everyday? Packed lunches can be just as nice and cheaper. Is it really necessary to hire the latest DVD EVERY WEEKEND? look seriously at all these things and work out how much you can save over a month. You will be surprised. We spend far too much on "wants and that can leave us with too little money for the needs. How can I cut down in baby cost? Disposable nappies are a want, we buy them so we dont HAVE to wash them out for another wear. Save money big time in this dept allowing you to spread that extra money over a need. Hey I know they are convenient, but you have to ask yourself this Question- "DO I want to this Budget to work? or do I want an easier lifestyle? WHICH is more important NOW?!" Dont impulse spend on sweet treats for the kids, LET THOSE TREATS be treats for the kids that they appreciate because they dont get them often.

It all boils down to sacrifice. A little here and a little there to make your money go further. Its only until you get on your feet, but to make a BUDGET work, you must commit to wanting it to work, so personal sacrifice is not a scary thing. No one has dropped dead from washing out clothes nappies to save several hundred dollars over a year, and at the end of that year that Credit Card looks a lot smaller than it did say 10 months ago, AND baby is almost out of naps and I have less worrys on my brow. It will work folks, all you have to do is WANT it to work. Commitment, Sacrifice and the end results are Positive. You can do it!!!!

Re: When theres never enough money.

Budgeting works great for my wife and I.   We've been budgeting for over 10 years now and couldn't imagine handling our finances without it.    Contrary to what people might think, budgeting made us feel like we had more money because we were able to stop up the "holes" where the money was leaking out.

Re: When theres never enough money.

Nice article.  We have a target savings account that we put into frequently and when it reaches the target amount, can take it out for bills etc.

Also, if you can, have a nominated amount taken from your account on a regular basis that goes directly to the company you pay bills to.  Makes the amount lesser when you get the bills and is less stressful.

Re: When theres never enough money.

I am sure it would work just fine if you had the money to budget.  Living on a fixed income and buying medication and such, you don't have the money left over to budget.  It just doesn't pay to be poor.

Re: When theres never enough money.

Hi, try the 'Needs and wants Theory' of mine. Next time you shop and you pick something up off the shelf, ask yourself 'is this a need or a want?' if its a want then put it back. eg....biscuits or cookies are a want, a Banana is a need.

You can cook own bikkies, you dont need a garden to grow your own veges, tomatoes and other veges will also grow in big plastic pots and produce the same crops. Clothes for the kids from recycled shops look just as good as new stuff.Toys brought in recycled shops and cleaned up and wrapped in pretty paper look just as good to a child.  I was where you are once and boy, did I have to put on my thinking cap in ways to spend less so I had more to spread around in other areas. Good luck.

Re: When theres never enough money.

When my wife an I started budgeting, we didn't have very much money and my wife said almost exactly the same thing you did here- "We don't have enough money to budget!"     The fact is, the less money you have, the more you need budjeting, because it will help you stretch out your limited resources.  Give it a try and you'll be surprised how much it will help you!

Re: When theres never enough money.

I used to do this, and yes it did work after a fashion. But I found that I was dipping in to some things and not having enough for another. We just did not have enough money coming in to the house even for the necessities. However we overcame that hump.

Re: When theres never enough money.

this is an interesting idea but quite strict, i have found that bills inc rent and food are the only things i pay like this and a monthly budget works better for us rather than a weekly one. (some people are also not comfortable with cash like this in their house, i am not one of them but i know others that are) eliminating all the wants from your budget is good in theory but we all still need to be happy. if i could not have a little bit of money to spend on my hobbies and kiall is the same. just some things to consider cheers for a great article from becca!

Re: When theres never enough money.

hey Kathryn, your right, mental health is very important. I invented when I was a young mother, ways to keep our mental health healthy. I have quite a vivid imagination so learned ways to accommplish this using as little money as possible. I used to put aside a certain amount and never, ever, went over what I put aside. Good mental health is imperative to any success's in life. It doesnt take much money to be happy if you keep your needs in life simple. Keep smiling!!!
