Toilet Training

simplyme01ca by simplyme01ca Walking(May 2008) (rank 315th)

I was one of those who was very frustrated about getting my baby toilet trained, the harder we tried the harder it got.  One day I had a revelation, we let her go at her own pace...It was the best thing we could have ever done for our little girl

and for ourselves.  A child will know when they are ready to be toilet trained and they will certainly let you know .  The pressure we put on our children to be toilet trained just because they reach a certain age, to me is the wrong thing to do and I am saying this from experience.

Once we stopped trying to 'train' her things happened naturally and she was using the potty in no time at all, she didn't wet the bed night time either so it all happened together.  The less fuss we made the better it was...

So my advice for those who are getting frustrated with the potty training, just let it go for a while, see what happens with just gentle reminders...if your child doesn't have a medical problem then things with fall into the natural order and you to will wonder like I did what all the fuss was about.

Re: Toilet Training

good advice as kids develop differently and the less pressure put on them could only help the task

Re: Toilet Training

I agree, I think trying to push a child before they are ready just makes them even more adverse to it, they resist harder the harder you push and eventually it becomes such a trauma that they just won't do it at all. We don't force our kids to learn how to crawl, so why force them in this stage of development?

Re: Toilet Training

Good advice. My son is 22 mths and points to his diaper and says 'wet' when he is both wet and dirty. We have tried him on the potty and the toilet ... he is not keen on either. I am not going to push it and like you say.. I am sure he will let me know!

Re: Toilet Training

Hi there,

Sadly many parents try to toilet train their young ones before they are ready and this always ends up as a very stressful task for for parent and child . . Like you I have allowed all my children to take the first step, by doing this I have never had any problems and remarkably I have never had better wetters or little accidents . .

Well done on this article . .

Cheers Kellz
