Croup- What is it?

Juzzy by Juzzy Speaking(May 4th) (rank 212th)

My Son had croup when he was 6 months old and just managed to stay out of hospital with it. At the time i had no idea what it was, hopefully this advice will help other parents in the same situation.

What is it?-

Croup is a common illness in young children 6 months to 3 years but it can affect children up to the age of 6. It is a viral infection of the upper airway. It affects the voicebox (larynx) and windpipe (trachea) usually follows a common cold and is more common in winter.

What are the symptoms?-

A barking cough and noisy breathing are the main symptoms. The cough is a dry cough and sounds like a seal barking. A strider (a high pitched wheezing) may develop which is a serious sign. The wheezing happens when the child is breathing out not breathing in. Usually the symptoms are worse at night.

What is the treatment?-

It is important to keep the child calm. Firstly get the child to the doctor to make sure that the child does in fact have croup. Give panadol for the fever, antibotics will not help because it is a viral infection.

When the child is in bed prop them up with some pillows for support, it will help with the breathing. Using a vaporiser in the childs bedroom will help them greatly with the breathing  at night, moist air is the most helpful treatment. If the child is rather upset and finding it hard to breath then wrap them in a blanket and take them outside into the cool air. It will help them breath. Also you can try to get them to calm down by taking their mind off what is going on by giving them a book to read or watching some television.

When should you seek immediate medical help?-

Take your child straight to hospital if

  • The strider gets worse or you can hear it when the child is sleeping
  • The child starts going pale or blue
  • The child is floppy
  • The child is restless or irrational

If the child just doesn't look right, we all know how our children act when they are sick so if you are anyway concerned take them to the hospital.

There has always been talk as to whether croup is contagious or not. It is my thought that if the child is sick it is best just to keep them away from other children anyway.

Thank you all for reading this. I hope i have helped someone

Juzzy

Re: Croup- What is it?

The only thing Id suggest is get rid of the age range.......several of my children have suffered from this. The earliest started at 2 months old. and so far the oldest had an attack when he was 12!!!!???

Great work anyway!

Re: Croup- What is it?

Just double checked on the NHS DIrect Site I mentioned below and this is what they say (may be worth adapting it into the article?):

"Croup usually affects young children between the ages of six months and six years old. However, children who are over the age of six, and have asthma, may also get croup. It is also possible for children who are under six months of age to develop the condition, but this is rare. In very rare cases, adults can get croup."

Re: Croup- What is it?

Hi,

All of the research i have done on the subject all say 6 months to 3 years. That is not to say that your child doesn't have an attack at the age of 12. But i was just doing this advice on my personal experience and what i have researched

Thank You for commenting.

Re: Croup- What is it?

Oh how i wish this was written last week when my son had croup. His wasaweful. He went from happy and healthy to not being able to breathe in 3 1/2 hours. His croup was bad enough to land him in hospital for a night. They gave him steroids to strengthen his throat and ventalin to help his breathing, they also gave him something (not sure what) in a nebuliser (sp). He still had very bad strider the next morning and they were going to keep him another night. Thankfully they let me take him home, although he wasnt discharged so if he got bad again during the night i could take him straight back.

A week later and the poor little thing is still coughing his little heart out, but he is breathing much much better. I'm glad that i followed my instincts. I am not usually someone who will run to the doctor when something is not quite right, but im SO glad that i did this time!

Great article. Thanks xox

Re: Croup- What is it?

That was exactly how my son went when he got it the first time. He went to bed fine the night before and woke up in the morning and couldn't breath. Thankfully we have a great doctor who managed to keep him out of hospital but i did have a letter which would have put him in hospital straight away if we needed it.

Thanks for commenting. Hope your son is much better now

Re: Croup- What is it?

my nephew had several bouts of croup when he was 9-11 - he got rushed in an ambulance to hospital each time and nearly had an emergency tracheotomy once. My SIL was told he would grow out of it when his trachea was large enough not to close up during an attack, and he has. She had thought it was asthma and was trying to get him to take his inhaler which, as he couldnt breathe in, didnt help. Good advice to listen out for the strider - that's when to call the ambulance!

Re: Croup- What is it?

I just looked it up on NHS Direct: here is what they say about when to call an ambulance (thoguht I'd better check!):

Call your GP straightaway if  the child's condition worsens or any complications develop. Call an ambulance if the child is unable to breathe, if there is blueness around the mouth, or if the skin around the neck or ribcage is drawn in.

Here is the link, in case anyone wants to read extra.

Re: Croup- What is it?

Thanks for that extra bit of advice. Croup has to be one of the most scary things a parent can watch their child go through. My son had his first attack at 6 months and i had no idea what it was. He almost ended up in hospital. He now gets it about twice a year and it is still scary everytime he gets it.
