Photgraphing baby

JadieLady by JadieLady Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 19th)

I am relaying advice given to me by a professional photographer.

1. When the lady or man comes around to take baby's photo in hospital, politely decline. until the age of three months or so, you can take the same quality photo's with even a disposable camera. these photographs

do not capture baby's personality and are not 'touched up' so it is not worth the amount you pay for them. If you like this style of photo, take one youself!

2. The best way to decide on how to use a photographer is to go to the baby expo. lots of companies are giving away photo shoots. little images gives them away to EVERYONE. take the opportunity to suss out their style and quality, and decide if you want to use them again, and get a free picture of your angel. as mentioned before, the best time to start taking professional pictures of your baby is around the three month mark, or when they can lie on their tummy and hold the top half of their body up on their arms as shown in the picture. you can take some very nice ones earlier, but these are the best times to use the freebies and suss it all out.

3. Be wary of supermarket shoots. these people usually tell you its a 3,4 or 7 dollar shoot and you go into some competition and you receive a free picture. the picture is usually 1/4 of an A4 page, and they generally pressure you to buy a package ( I have just finished paying off a package and frankly, it wasnn't all that good.) The baby in the potplant with a flower sticking out of its ear look generally tends to age after a while too. havea good think about the props (if any) that are being used.

4. Using a private photographer may end up being a bit more pricey, but you cannot beleive the value you can get, and the nicest pictures. they take the time to get the smile, the character and personality. they edit the pictures to get rid of shadows of dribble etc. But always ask to see a portfolio and make sure your happy with the photographer. You usually receive your photo's on disk or have access to the negatives instead of just getting a picture in a cardboard frame.

5. No matter who you are with, always look at portfolio's. Decide if the pictures are really well done, or if it is something you could do yourself. if they look kind of ordinary and like every other companies, your probably better off going elsewhere to get a unique photo.

I have just taken Liam to our photographer, so when I receive the pictures back I will post them.

I hope this helps someone!

OKay, here are a couple of the professional ones. for the entire sitting, the touching up andeffects, and the disc it cost $80.00

Photgraphing baby
I've taken hundreds of photos of my kids as every parent does.  But having that one time professional photo taken is worth the money, I was lucky though I have two professional photographers in the family so I only paid for the photo's not there time, but yes agree worth lashing out on.

Expensive photos.

I don't know how much it costs for professional photography in other counties, but here in the U.S. they are expensive. There are sitting fees and expensive photo "packages".  So for the same cost, you can buy yourself a good quality digital camera. With your own, you can take tons of pictures everyday that actually captures your baby's personality. With some research and some pointers from friends, and a lot of practice, you can even compose a good enough picture that looks like it was done by a professional.  Also, with a good photo editing software and a good photo printer you can even make cards and calenders and baby announcement. I myself made my son's baby announcement photo card using only Microsoft Word.

You are right, they can be expensive, and photoshop is a fantastic editing program. i found if you find a small company they are often cheaper and do great deals. my entire wedding including the shoot, the meetings before and after, disk, prints and framed shots cost less than $800 AUD. why? because my photographer's office is in his basement. he doesnt have high overheads like most big companies, and really wants us to be happy with what he has done :) butas i said, you are the one who has to be happy :) and there is nothing to say that someone should definately get professional pics, it really comes down to the individual. i for instance, take terrible pics lol

Try Digital cameras
Digital cameras are the way to go.  We were getting annoyed with trying to take piccies of the kids and one would blink or look away.  We had professionals done of them last year which were nice but I really like a lot we take by ourselves.  Last christmas after we put our christmas tree up we dressed the three kids up and put them in front of the tree.  40 odd clicks of the camera (digital thank goodness), it was hard with a 5, 3 and 10mth old but fun, I finally got a nice shot and slightly edited it on the computer. Had them printed out for all the rellies and friends (who all live interstate) and sent them off in their christmas cards.  Everyone was happy to get an updated, and very nice piccy, and it didn't even cost me anymore than $20.
