Potty Training

JadieLady by JadieLady Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 19th)

I was wondering when do most people start potty training? How did you start? What's your technique? How long did it take? Do you use a little "mini" potty or a toilet attachment?

This advice is written in refernce to th eabove question. if this is the

wrong way to go about it it would be great if someone could let me know :) and please ignore my terrible typing. frozen fingers lol.

I toilet trained two of my brothers and one of my sisters, so i figure i might be able to give some help.

I usually start about 1-2 years old. it depends on the child really. if they are starting to tell you they piddled or poopd in their nappy then thats a pretty good sign you should get started, but you can start much earlier and teach them to know this stuff.

Your approach comes down to you, your situation, your child, all that stuff. everyone is individual so its silly to have a generic guideline for everyone.

I started off with Konnah when he was 1.5 years old. he has a speech disability, so it raised a challenge i nthat aspect, and it was also my first attempt to train a child as well :)

i started by taking him to the toilet when i changed his nappy tolink the dirty nappy to the toilet in his head. i also explained that big boys go to the toilet instead of wearing nappies, and that he was becoming a big boy. i explained how the toilet worked ( ie, sit on it, wipe if necessary, flush.) i also told him that its okay if it takes a while before he can do it, as we all need to learn, and to ask for help when he needs to use the toilet. i completely ignored the pull-ups, i found them too expensive to stick on the shopping list (my mum has 8 kids and had my grandma living with us, and neither of my parents worked) so he went straight into jocks. none of those plastic liners as i found they gave him a rash, and i dont think it felt too different from a nappy. with jocks he felt it (this is gross i know) run down his leg, and he saw us clean it up, and he went and sat on the toilet which helped.  i didn't use a potty at all as i figured it would take twice as long to teach hi mto use one, and then another.

when we were teching him to learn to aim we simply stuck a pingpong ball in there and told him to try and hit it. (after we worked out he wanted to cover anything white with piddle) after he's done the ball can be easily fished out with a fishtank net that cost around $3.00 and left in the net until net use.

My sister was a shy one and wouldnt use the toile when someone was watching. instead she would stand in front of the toilet and do her business and get upset if someone tried ot put her on the toilet. We bought a simple child safety step specificaly for toilet traoining that can be found iin most baby outlets and turned around. once she was done she would ask fr help with the wiping and loved to press the button.

Declan went through the same process as Konnah. but beware. declan saw someone having a pee in a urinal, (something konnah hadnt seen) and ever since we have had yellow walls in the toilet.

Just be patient and do your own thing. what i have typed above is what i did with my brothers and sister, and is not a recommendation, or a guideline, it is just what i did to give an idea of what you could try.

re:
unfortunatly patience and persistence are the most useful tools in toilet training, as with everything else! potties are great, but don't work with everyone. they can confuse the littlies, as we teach them to use a potty, and then the toilet.as babies develop at different rates it can be hard. the main 'problem' (not that there is anything wrong wit hit..) is that at this age not all of the little ones have developed their knowledge transference skills (more likely to be underdeveloped in boys apparently) by this time. ie, they are not fully able to grasp that using the potty is the same as a toilet, only the toilet is a bit bigger. it is different for every child, and it sounds as though yours is stubborn :) just keep at it, and try not to let him see you get too upset when your favourite potplant dies from being used as a practise toilet :) and also, thank you hrs2004, that contraption looks like it might come in handy! i hope everyone with a little prince has a look, i am seriosly considering one for my boy when he gets to that age :)and thanks, i only hope that i can get through it that quickly! :)

Re toilet training, I must be impatient
Anymore advice for a 2 1/2 yr old who knows what everything is for and how it works but refuses to sit on the toilet. I have tried about 4 diff pottys even the inner bit for the regular toilet and a step! Tried the time to pee book and he can recite it back to me. Its winter and I've taken to having him in a combo of trainer pants and jocks ( outside), when he wets he still doesn't want his pants changed! When will it click with him?

Well done you!

I am at this stage now and although my daughter is ready and I had intended to start, life just still seems too hectic. We stupidly introduced training pants as they are "Buy one, get one free" at the moment. She saw them, likes the pretty pictures and now won't use anything else. But she does pull them down to use the potty and pull them up afterwards, so I guess they are half working. Ok, she doesn't always bother, but we are part way there and I am hoping that this will ease some of the stress.

I bet having done this three times alreasy, it will be a breeze with your boy, Incidentally, I saw an advert for a funky thing...the Weeman. Maybe that helps avoid yellow walls
