Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

FremantleDocker by FremantleDocker Talking Back(May 2008) (rank 56th)

I have found that the supermarket products like fresh fruit and vegetables and meat are becoming rather poor. They aren't as fresh to me as they used to be. Tomato's are getting softer, the banana's are going black quicker, and there's less meat wise being packed and the prices are

sky rocketing.

I have found that instead of buying all the above from the supermarkets, i either go to the independant grocers, as they have better quality fruit and vegetables, and alot cheaper, and taste so much nicer, and the butchers, as they have better quality meat and fresher too, and taste delicious, and we always get the family packs like bbq pack, family pack, footy pack etc. Good value for money also.

I also shop in cheap shops also for kitchen utensils, and soups, noodles etc, and always buying things from there as they are the cheap brands of foods, and so much cheaper. In the supermarkets, i'm for ever buying the home brand products, as they just taste the same as the brand names, and sometimes even better.

So my point is, if you're hard up on money, or finding ways to save alot of money while grocery shopping, please go to the shops i have mentioned, and you will see the difference once you have got everything you needed to get.

Shopping like this saves you alot of money, and it all adds up. cheaper the product the better in most cases.

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

I was told by a friend, to plan your meals for the week or fortnight, afternoon teas, lunches etc before you go shopping and only buy the products you need, also don't go to the shops hungry as you will buy too much food. ( she saved a hundred dollars in one week)

That is also another great idea. thanks so much for that.

I knew about eating before you go the shops, well, thats what we do with our daughter, and we wait until we get home to eat.

I worked for Safeway for 12 years, and did all my shopping at bi low, there not around anymore, Aldi all the way now. I can do my shopping for $140 per F/N thats without meat I buy it from the local in town.

Asian supermarkets are good for cheap noodles

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

Hi there. I used to work for Bi lo 6 years ago, and i hardly shopped there. It was always coles or woolworths ( safeway in Melbourne ) as i worked in Melbourne for Bilo and i would only get the things that were reduced where i worked and got the rest from Coles or Woolworths as it was always cheaper.

Thanks heaps for your comments

Kerri

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

Hey FD - hmmm, think I'd rather call you Kerri  8-)

Spot on re the cheapo shops - even if a product only lasts 1/2 as long as the name brand, its usually cheaper to buy 2 el cheapos anyway! Roll on home brand - we use heaps in our household, for no obvious loss of quality.

Also - check out your local IGA supermarket. Some are really good, some are ripoffs...our local guys (Coolum Qld) have comparable prices to the 2 big boys but also source fruit/veg from the local area, so not only much fresher and better quality, but supports local farmers. In addition, they directly support a lot of local schools, sporting clubs and charities, plus have a customer loyalty program - and you can get your 4c/litre discount on fuel from ANY petrol station.

As far as meat - look out for "meat world" type stores, basically bulk butchers. Say $60 of meat from one of them will buy you easily twice as much as the big guys, and for some reason seems to last longer??! - so you only need to go monthly or so (obviously freezing lots).

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

Hello ekkaboy. Frematledocker is a  bit long isn't it and Kerri is great.

Exactly my point there ekkaboy, i'd rather buy 2 of the same of the cheap product or even one as it does save money.

I love buying home brand products. I'm not ashamed to do so.

I shop at Foodland IGA, as here in SA im sure we don't have just the independant store of IGA its combined with foodland in the one store. But yeah, they're cheap as.

We also freeze our meats and from the butchers. thanks heaps for your great comments

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

Great article, the big chains are raking in the money and giving very little in return. Excellent reminder to all to seek alternative places like markets, fruiters, butchers etc to get better quality/tasting produce.  Gone are the days when the big chains carried cheaper produce, if one looks around they will find comparable prices(if not cheaper)elsewhere.  Incidently if one happens to find dearer produce compared to the big store eqiuvalent, I'm sure it would  last longer, taste better and be higher in nutritional value.

I use the cheap outlets for deodrant and some other stuff....I can get deodrant(top brands)like $2.00 a bottle!!!so i buy 10 at a time....why pay $4.00-$6.00 a bottle? Yet at other times dont mind paying abit extra if more mileage is to be gained.

Small veggie shops and butchers are always fantastic... Also at the butchers you have more choice too.. Same as the small veggie shops...  :)

Yeah, good point there, you do have more of a choice and variety of meats than you do in the supermarket. Well done on pointing that out.

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

I agree, the veg at bigger supermarket chains like Coles is getting pretty bad. I actually went there  to buy groceries the other day and the eggplant looked absolutely pathetic. I had bought an eggplant probably a month before that at an independent which looked like a real good quality eggplant.

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

I've noticed that aswell, and the fruit and veg are actually smaller too i noticed today in the supermarket, and at the fruit and veg at the grocers are bigger adn better. I can't believe how the supermarket things are getting worse all the time

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

Hi,

I very rarely shop at supermarkets these days but when I do I tend to steer clear of the veg section and also the meat section as some sights are just too horrible to look at . . Interestingly I have found myself saving money shopping at fruit and veg shops as you can't stray to other items, just the fruit and veg.

Cheers Kellz

Thanks for letting me know about this. I already knew this, as my brother works for tip top and they also use plain label's on their products and so do other companies.
