Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

FremantleDocker by FremantleDocker Talking Back(May 6th) (rank 33rd)

I have found that the supermarket products like fresh fruit and vegetables and meat are becoming rather poor. They aren't as fresh to me as they used to be. Tomato's are getting softer, the banana's are going black quicker, and there's less meat wise being packed and the prices are sky rocketing.

I have found that instead of buying all the above from the supermarkets, i either go to the independant grocers, as they have better quality fruit and vegetables, and alot cheaper, and taste so much nicer, and the butchers, as they have better quality meat and fresher too, and taste delicious, and we always get the family packs like bbq pack, family pack, footy pack etc. Good value for money also.

I also shop in cheap shops also for kitchen utensils, and soups, noodles etc, and always buying things from there as they are the cheap brands of foods, and so much cheaper. In the supermarkets, i'm for ever buying the home brand products, as they just taste the same as the brand names, and sometimes even better.

So my point is, if you're hard up on money, or finding ways to save alot of money while grocery shopping, please go to the shops i have mentioned, and you will see the difference once you have got everything you needed to get.

Shopping like this saves you alot of money, and it all adds up. cheaper the product the better in most cases.

Great article, the big chains are raking in the money and giving very little in return. Excellent reminder to all to seek alternative places like markets, fruiters, butchers etc to get better quality/tasting produce.  Gone are the days when the big chains carried cheaper produce, if one looks around they will find comparable prices(if not cheaper)elsewhere.  Incidently if one happens to find dearer produce compared to the big store eqiuvalent, I'm sure it would  last longer, taste better and be higher in nutritional value.

I use the cheap outlets for deodrant and some other stuff....I can get deodrant(top brands)like $2.00 a bottle!!!so i buy 10 at a time....why pay $4.00-$6.00 a bottle? Yet at other times dont mind paying abit extra if more mileage is to be gained.

Thankyou for the great comments and feedback. Yeah, totally agree with you there . Where have those days gone where there were cheaper everything.

That's right. I also go for the cheap brands of deodorant, and other things like that. good on you for doing that.

Small veggie shops and butchers are always fantastic... Also at the butchers you have more choice too.. Same as the small veggie shops...  :)

Yeah, good point there, you do have more of a choice and variety of meats than you do in the supermarket. Well done on pointing that out.

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

I agree, the veg at bigger supermarket chains like Coles is getting pretty bad. I actually went there  to buy groceries the other day and the eggplant looked absolutely pathetic. I had bought an eggplant probably a month before that at an independent which looked like a real good quality eggplant.

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

I've noticed that aswell, and the fruit and veg are actually smaller too i noticed today in the supermarket, and at the fruit and veg at the grocers are bigger adn better. I can't believe how the supermarket things are getting worse all the time

Re: Saving money at the shopping mall for groceries

Hi,

I very rarely shop at supermarkets these days but when I do I tend to steer clear of the veg section and also the meat section as some sights are just too horrible to look at . . Interestingly I have found myself saving money shopping at fruit and veg shops as you can't stray to other items, just the fruit and veg.

Cheers Kellz

Thanks for letting me know about this. I already knew this, as my brother works for tip top and they also use plain label's on their products and so do other companies.
