Surviving Reflux: My facts (PART 2)

Anonymous Author (May 2008)

Hi guys – Here is part two of my three part series . .

I hope that some are finding it useful and insightful . . . . Living with a child with severe reflux is a life changing event and one that requires strength, understanding, compassion but most

of all support from those around you . .

Introducing solids This can be a nightmare if you are not careful. It has been suggested that most babies the Gastroesophageal Reflux may also suffer from food sensitivity. So introducing solids must be done carefully and slowly It is best NOT to try an introduce solids until around 6months of age as most babies with Gastroesophageal Reflux have very sensitive tummies.

When introducing solids its best to use the two week rule. What this means is that you can only add a new solid every two weeks. If your baby is likely to have a reaction to a type of food you WILL usually know by the end of the two weeks.

So if your bub becomes upset, cry’s more often, reflux becomes worse or a rash appears you know which food is responsible and to stop using it.

Here are some hints:

  • Start off first with just plain Baby Rice. Only a teaspoon or two at first and then increase the amount slowly over a two-week period.
  • Next try adding pureed pear to the rice. Use only pear as little sensitive tummies very easily tolerate pears. Once this has been established for a two-week period you are ready to try vegetables!

Introducing vegetables can be very scary but as long as you follow the two-week rule it should be fine. There are also three vegetables that are the best to start off with as they too have been proven to be less stressful on sensitive tummies. Always steam vegetables where possible and home cooked is best as there are no chemicals/additives etc.

Here are some hints:

  • Start of with Pumpkin. Steam it until it is over soft then puree it. Once again start with a few teaspoons full and then increase the amount over a two-week period.
  • Next add Zucchini (peeled). Steam 50-50 with the pumpkin and repeat the procedure above. Make sure you do the two-week trial.
  • Now it’s time to add Broccoli. . Best with 50% pumpkin, 25% Zucchini and 25% broccoli. Follow two-week period.
  • Now add potato making all the others 25% as well as the potatoes

Now you can work with meat. You can either use chicken or lamb mince to mix with the vegetables . . .

If all has gone well you can now add just about anything. .  Just remember to use the “two week rule”

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to reading your feedback. . Part three will follow shortly.

Re: Surviving Reflux: My facts (PART 2)

Great article!

I think this could apply even to non-reflux babies, especially since allergies seem to be so common these days. The two week rule is a great way to rule out troublesome foods for everyone.

Thanx for sharing!

Sarah
