Helping out at school

Anonymous Author (May 7th)

When your baby goes to school you feel lost at home, but you can help out at the school if you dont go back to work. I love helping out at the school. it is so rewarding and so much fun. Aswell as the teachers love you for it. At our school we have a heap of things for parents to help with.

P&C: the P&C-Parents and community. we have a meeting the first tuesday of every month where we discus things in need for the school and wellbeing of the students. we have fundraising and all sorts of good things. At the moment in our fundraising we are having a mothers day stall where in the last few years we have made up to $1000 from a school of 300. in an average year we raise funds exceding $15,000. Last year we got government funding to solar power our school as well as we have a green funding as we compost all our food scraps at school and have a very minimal rubish outage. with the P&C we support the school in buying alot of important things like new home readers and microscopes. they are some of the things we bought last year. We are always looking for more parents to  help as there is never enough hands to help raise funds for schools. So look into joining your schools P&C.

Parent Axcillery: this in my school is held tuesdays come rain hail or shine. the idea of this group again is parent run, but we half the teachers work load by doing all their photo coping cutting laminating all those little things that take up time. we have a ball and it is a great way to meet and know the other parents in the school. yes there is the gossip queens there too but it is helpful to know the buzz of the school. It is such a rewarding thing and i would recomend it for all schools as teachers have a big enough job teaching our kids that an extra help goes along way. every year we have a final assemberly and the principal thanks us and gives us a gift for all the work we do. we also help with school assemberlies on the classes back drops as well as the library presentations like book week.

Support a reader: this is such a important task and is needed so much in every school. there are so many children who faallt hrough the cracks cause there just isnt enough time or resources to help these kids. we have a full comapasity atm so i am not involved with this also i am one of the kids who fell through the cracks and cannot read very well.

Roster: now this is the fun part if your child is in kindy or pre primary. some other classes have parent help still. my sons year 1 class does. I helped in my daughters class on tuesday and i had a ball. it is so rewarding meeting your childs friends and seeing them in the class room as they are so different. it is also rewarding seeing their development in the class and chatting to the teachers. also helping the other children doing their work and taking some time off the teachers hands by helping like cutting up the fruit and getting out the mats to sit on and the playdough. watching them sing sondgs and learn a new letter and number. it truely is my most favourite.

Canteen and uniform shop: i dont help out here as they have their set people who do this but it again is fun. making all the students lunches and knowing that u are helping them grow and look good in their school uniform.

so here are the things we have at my childrens school. believe me getting involved with the school is so rewarding and yes it is volintering but it is so much funa nd a great way to make new friends

Re: Helping out at school

I sure miss those days when I got to help out at my sons' elementary school   in the classroom, library, recess duty - whatever!  Fun to see them and meet their school friends.  It really is important to get involved.  I actually work for a company that promotes school inolvement for parents by helping PTO/PTA groups with ideas.  One idea we've just launched is schoolfamily.com - we've got a great article for kindergarten parents on 11 tips just for you- anyone with younger kids may want to check it out! http://www.schoolfamily.com/school-family-articles/article/802-11-tips-for-kindergarten-parents

Re: Helping out at school

Once my daughter settles into school, i will be asking on how i can help around the school during the school hours. Your children's school sounds really cool.

I agree with LibbyS, as it does build a great relationship with the teacher and other parent's aswell. Sounds great to do. I will inquire in a few weeks about doing this at my daughters school

As a teacher, I can't recommend this enough! It's a great way to build a relationship with your child's teacher and other parents. It also means that you'll  probably know your child's teacher the following year. It also means that younger children become familiar with the school before the first day of grade one!

Great article!

Hi Liz,

Great article. I  agree that its a great way to meet people. I used to be on a P & C commitee before I had Keiraleah. Sami used to love me helping in the canteen. I also did reading group and volunteered on many occasions.

My favourite was always the mothers day and fathers day stalls.

Re: Helping out at school

This is definitely great advice! Parental involvement is so important and it also shows your child that what they are doing every day really matters to you. I love it when I can manage to chaperone on my daughter's field trips. She's happy that I'm there, and like you said, I get to meet all the little friends she talks about and see how she acts in a school environment.

And research actually shows that the more involved you are with the school, the better your children do.
