Never too young to learn

milko-fats by milko-fats Speaking(May 2008) (rank 374th)

I have always taught my children never to be a bully or pick on disabled people as you never know when one day u might have an accident or have a medical condition & you might be that disabled person. I was bullied at school & cried lots so I

asked my children to open their eyes & try to assist one special person while in the school term at school. Both my children (I believe) did just that & both helped at least one disabled child at school & today now my daughter works with these beautiful people. I am so proud of my children. I do believe she gets out of her career just as much as the beautiful people get from her care.

I hope this advice is ok for this site as I feel this is advice well given to any child that goes out the door each morning.

Re: Never too young to learn

At what age did you start telling your children this? and when did you think it started to click?

The first time my son saw someone in a wheel chair was when he was a few months younger than 3 years old. Of course the wheelchair fascinated him. I had to explain to him why the man was in a wheelchair and encouraged him to walk to the person and say hi. I wanted to give my son the impression that though this man is different, he is normal in a sense that he shouldn't be stared at and gawked at and that my son could say hi and wave to him just like he likes to do with other people.

Your children are great!
