Big family activities or outings can often be costly and exhausting. When we only have one day to spend at an attraction, there is so much pressure to take it all in that we often expect too much from the experience. What can happen is that the exciting, fun-filled day
we’ve anticipated turns out to be a big disappointment. Large crowds, inflated prices, imperfect weather, and/or tired children can come into play and can make for a less than pleasurable experience.
It’s not always practical but when at all possible, consider purchasing a membership at a theme park, zoo or major attraction in your area. When you pay the extra money up front for an annual membership for instance, you take the pressure off from “having” to get as much out of the day as possible. Instead, when you are able to take a more relaxed approach, everyone ends up having more fun. You can break it up into more days throughout the year to enjoy what the attraction has to offer leisurely.
My family and I are members at our local Aquarium as well as our local Zoo. As members we are privy to special “members only” events that the facilities offer. These are days and sometimes evenings when only members are invited to visit and it has made it more pleasurable for our family. The Aquarium, for example, offers “behind the scenes” dates when members can come to participate in activities that are unique and fun for the kids. The Zoo offers a summer night series at a discount for members. Plus we get newsletters keeping us up to date on the goings on at the facility. Keep in mind as well that often a membership at one place will also include discounts at other related locations. Like Museums or State Parks. This helps make the money go even further and make it even more worthwhile.
Another way we save money is by packing our own lunches and snacks. This really does save a bundle. Most places have picnic seating and eating areas and welcome you to bring your own food. Be sure to check before you go so you aren’t caught off guard if they have rules about it.
For a fun and more economical way to enjoy local attractions, be sure to look into memberships. It feels good to support local attractions (especially non-profits) and it makes it much more enjoyable all the way around.
