Exercise and children

FremantleDocker by FremantleDocker Talking Back(May 9th) (rank 33rd)

Exercise is very important these days for everyone, and i think especially in children. They need the exercise to keep them healthy, and strong.

Everytime they walk, they are always strengthening their muscles in their body, and they get fitter and healthier and will concetrate more on what is going around them and what is happening everywhere.

If you find it hard to exercise your child like if your child's school is too far too walk, here are some tips on what you can do

  • Set up a planner so they can exercise on the weekends, like an obstacle course
  • Take them to a playground for a few hours
  • If you have a dog, let them walk the dog around the block a few times
  • If you have an oval near by, let them play with a ball
  • If you drive to the shops, park your car in the furtherst car park so they get exercise

I've done this with all my children, and the feed back i get from them is the exercise clears their heads when they play footy at the oval, or they take miss5 to the park.

Children need to exercise every day for at least half an hour.

Re: Exercise and children

great advice.

coming from a european background when i was little my mum used to "excercise " my baby brother.

she would sit on the floor with her legs streched and my brother lying on his back with his head cradled at her ankles.

this kept him secure from falling then mum would take his arms and cross them over with a little stretch. and do the same to the legs.

i would love watching then it would be my turn i loved it.

then in turn when i had kids i did this as well. just tonight my son who is 25 turned around (he is a fitness instrucot and currently doing a degree in human movement) turned to his dad who was lying on the sofa and started "excercing " hubbys arms in this fashion.

our forefathers especially in villages didnt have the luxury of sports equipement but  new how important "excercise is " to children

this is great advice that you have provided. especially with todays technology when our children "forget to play"

Re: Exercise and children

Great ideas! They have done studies that show kids who exercise do better at school too. I don't drive, so we always walk to school. Although next year, the high school is across the road lol.

Re: Exercise and children

Thanks for that. :) Yeah, i've heard that also, as their minds are more active etc. I try and walk my kids when i can. I live across the road from a high school too, and it's awesome.

Re: Exercise and children

This is a lot of why I wanted to move to a warmer climate! (Which we did last year.) It seemed like my kids could never get outside where we were living before, and we all suffered cabin fever most of the year. It was awful. A lot of the locals had no trouble getting out and playing in freezing temperatures, but I never liked it, and my kids learned not to either, I think. Now it's so easy cuz they can just go out in the yard pretty much any time. Now they ride bikes and kick a ball around instead of watching so much TV! Yay!

Re: Exercise and children

You feel terrible don't you when you can't let your children go out side and play. They get frustrated also don't they? Glad to hear you've moved to a better town where they can go out now.

Re: Exercise and children

We ALL get frustrated!  Heck, I need outside time too! I prefer chores like mowing the lawn to doing dishes any day. And I actually like playing with the kids. That's one of the best parts of parenting, isn't it? Still getting to play kickball, go for bike rides and just run around...I like it.

Definitely much better here in Florida.

Yeah, we all certainly do get frustrated at things like this. Yeah, i agree, the mowing the lawns is great. Sure is, playing with the kids is the best healthy way i think.

Re: Exercise and children

So true.  I walk my daughter to and from school everyday (weather permitting).  Her school is a healthy canteen and they really promote moving more.  She has sport twice a week and she loves it.

Re: Exercise and children

I don't walk my daughter to school in the mornings as it's way too cold for her. I do walk her home though, and like you said, if the weather is alright too. Good to hear your daughter loves sport. Mine love running, and footy

Re: Exercise and children

LOL Libby. Yeah, come to think of it, mine isn't as nasty / bitchy when she plays outside. Yeah, i've started to walk to and from school when i can, and i also take my kids for walks on the weekend or they go to the park and play or the playground which is good enough for me.

Re: Exercise and children

Thanks cazza.

Same here about the healthy eating and exercise. My daughter has a relief teacher that actually works at the school who takes the class out to the play ground and does various other things with them which is exercise related,  and does this 30 minutes each time and 3 days a week.
