Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

cathbusymum by cathbusymum Talking Back(May 2008) (rank 122nd)

The first time most people hear these words is when your baby or babies are born prematurely. This brings with it feelings of stress, anxiety and helplessness. What can I do to help my child? Some of this fear can be overcome simply by knowing what happens

and the equipment and procedures of the ward.

On entering the ward, you will be asked to wash your hands! Repeatedly! Hygiene and sterile conditions are a must for tiny babies. You will then be shown to your baby and an explanation given of all the equipment Feel free to ask as many questions as you want.

Here is a list of the basic equipment and procedures.

Humidicrib: These are special units where baby sleeps so that their temperature is kept stable. A lot of effort goes into staying warm by the human body, so this way baby’s energy can go into growing instead.

Heart Monitor: A monitor will record the heart rate.

Oxygen: Oxygen may be given. ( CPAP) which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.

Tube feeding: Young babies may take time to develop the sucking reflex or tire very easily when feeding. In these cases, a tube will be used to feed. Again energy is best left for growing.

Cares: Spending time with your baby is precious. You will be offered to learn the basics of nursing care so that you can take over much of their care yourself. This involves taking their temperature, changing their nappy, bathing and feeding if by breast or bottle. You will be offered time for skin to skin contact as well. You may also be asked to express milk if tube feeding is required.

While I know the difficulties of having a baby in the neonatal unit, knowing the basics and being able to provide care yourself, can make all the difference in feeling more in control of your babies welfare and help your own emotional wellbeing. It can be weeks before baby has gained enough weight to go home, being patient can be one of the biggest challenges. Counseling is offered to all parents and information is given at all times. All aspects of mothercraft information and services are also provided.

How do I come to know this? Jacquelyn and James were born at 34 weeks premature. They spent 7 days in the neonatal unit. I was indeed fortunate, as initially I was told it would be 3 to 4 weeks. They are now thriving.   I hope this article has helped in some way.  If you would like any additional information please feel free to minti mail me.

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Hey Cath,

Great article!! My neice was in NICU the whole time she was alive which was 6months. When she was born she only weighed 560grams. They did such a great job in there with her, most of them anyway.

Once again Great article.

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Thanks for a great article Cath,

Both my neices ( different sisters) were born prem and had to say at least 2 weeks in the NICU.  It can be very scarey for first time mums.  The babies all look so small and so precious.

The nurses have such a caring attitude that makes it a lot easier for the parents to deal with everything.

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Thank Cath for sharing your story. The NICU is a very scary place i am so glad that my kids never had to venture in there. My cousin was born 10 weeks early and going in to visit him is something i will never forget and that was 6 years ago. The nurses in the NICU deserve medals for their work.

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Hi honey,

Thanks for sharing this info . . . I too know how you felt as my last two pregnancies ended up with both girls being delivered prematurely due to severe complications . . ..

One thing that i love to add is that most NICU units are in URGENT need of hand knitted beanies/bonnets for prem babies . . So if you have any and you know some one that does PLEASE donate them to your local NICU . . ..

Cheers Kellz

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Hi Kellz,

Yes, your right about the beanies. Also hand knitted premmie jumpers as well. I wish I could knit so I could give something back. Maybe there will be an opportunity to raise money for them in the future.

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The beanies are on my to do list.

10 minutes is all it takes for one.

Great article. All my kids have come late and very healthy so I am grateful for that.

I once visited a NICU (friend had twins when I was preg with my second child, she was due after me though!)and it was just amazing. Once the babies made the one kilo club it was a milestone.

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Great article Cath !!

I know exactly how you feel...
Alisha spent about 1 and 1/2 weeks in the hospital...
and I spent about 1 week there too...

It was hell because I was so worried about her..
But now she's great and there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with her :)

It sure felt like hell staying at the hospital that long. LOL
(aka jail. hahahaha)

Great job for sharing your experience !!

I'm so glad that Jackie and Jamie are ok now :)
The way I see it, babies can be born premature, but if taken care of well, then they will thrive.. as your article says :)
As long as you have a positive attitude, then this will motivate you to take good care of your child, and they will be fine in no time :)

I never gave up on Alisha...
And apart from her being underweight now (it's just our genes, we found out), you'd never even know that she was premmie !!!

Wonderful job Cath !
I'll stop rambling now. lol

Love Thuy xox

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Thanks Thuy,

Unless you've been there, its hard to understand the fear you have for your tiny little newborn. Taking some of that fear away was the idea for the article.

Yes, you sure look after them when you get them home. Having to go back to the NICU is not something anyone would want to do.

Apparently by the time they are two, they have caught up completely with other children in all growth and development.

Oh, and it did feel like jail LOL

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Great article Cathy.

Like you I wish I'd know the basics before my eldest was born, it would have made it a little easier.  But in saying that, the staff in there are amazing and they love all their little visitors like they are there own.

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Thank you for sharing this info, and the nurses in this area are amazing people and dont get enough recognition, cause they say they dont want to be thanked, they want to see our babies being taken home..

I have being in that room many times with family and friends, and its not easy, and your advise is so spot on, we do need to take care of us as well..

Your babies are so  gorgeous...

Re: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Great article Cath!!! I remember going to the neo natal unit with a friend I made in hospital. I have to say it was a little overwhelming at first. Just seeing those tiny little ones doing their level best to grow! The nurses that were in there were just brilliant and I know my friend owes them a lot. Glad that you two little one's are now thriving!

Well done,

fi xoxo
