Wholesome Television for the whole family

evarmint by evarmint Speaking(May 2008) (rank 500+)

I am interested in your comments and ideas relating to the piece of advice…

So, we don’t have cable or satellite television, because 98% of what they offer is garbage.   What my wife and I do instead is purchase DVD collections of good, commercial-free programming that my

children can watch at convenient times.     A couple of the programs we have purchased have really stood out as great examples of wholesome television that our kids absolutely love:

Planet Earth BBC Series – This is simply the most amazing nature program ever. It’s fabulous and mesmerizing for both parents and children.

The Andy Griffith Show – This is a television show from the 1960’s. It has very clean humor and every show has a little moral to it.   I don’t know what it is about this show (maybe Don Knotts), but my kids can’t get enough of it.

I am curious to know what great programs on DVD any of you out there might have also discovered. Please let me know!

Re: Wholesome Television for the whole family

I have another suggestion for wholesome family viewing. I take care of three boys whose mother has created a website called Super Natural Adventures, (www.supernaturaladventures.com) which features educational environmental videos for kids by kids. The videos are around 5 minutes each in length and they aim to not only educate and entertain, but to inspire their viewers to get outside and discover what is unique and special about the environment in their own backyard.

There is one DVD that I think will be for sale on Amazon starting in May about the boys' nature adventures at Tirimbina Rainforest Center in Costa Rica. Others are being produced. So these might be ones to add to your collection.

Furthermore, your family could create their own Super Natural Adventure video to share their nature experiences with the global community! There's info on the website about how to submit a video to the site.

Favourites for littles in our house include Dora, Poko, the Magic School Bus and Charlie and Lola.  There are some great documentaries on DVD out - though we borrow more from the library than we own.  Our library has a great selection of DVDs, so they are not watching the same shows over and over again
