Pregnancy leg cramps

shoolacy by shoolacy Talking Back(August 2006) (rank 84th)

Leg cramps were very common during my last stage of pregnancy and were very painful there is nothing the doctor can perscribe to stop or help this and it will come and go as it pleases. However the best advice I can give is to flex your foot upwards before

bed (or the time you are most suseptable to get them). So your toes are pointing upwards stretching your calf muscle, do this with both legs for a couple of minutes each, this should hopefully make them less frequent.

I was working as a waitress throughout my pregnancy including the last stages and although there is no real facts this may be have been the cause. So although exercise is still important try cycling or swimming rather than walking and if your on your feet at work during pregnancy relax when you get home, get your partner to rub your feet and legs even. Because personally my leg cramps were terrible and the soreness lasted for a couple of day's, and this is quiet common in many pregnant women.

Re: Pregnancy leg cramps

I had leg cramps with my first child.  I took Magnisium and they would go away.  I had to take it everyday for a while.  But it got rid of the pain. Great advice.

Peace

Ieg cramps
I had leg cramps too while pregnant, but fortunately only a couple of times. I did point my toes upward and it helped a great deal. Great advice!

cramps

I had terrible cramps in my calves. every night from a certain point. one night it was so bad i couldn't stretch my heel down to the floor when i was walking the next dsay. my lovely husband was great at amssaging them though :) absolutely flex those toes to the sky as often as possible, for heavens sake don't completely cut salt from your diet, (in my case add it to everything!) try havubgn a cofee in the morning, ora coke in the afternoon if you cut your caffeine levels down as this also helps, and lastly

never EVER point your toes whilst in bed. EVER! it brings on the cramps!

cramps
You're so right. A few times I ended up pointing my foot straight down while in bed and instantly I felt leg cramps coming on. But as soon as I pointed my foot up, the cramp was averted.

Flex those feet
Definately. I was advised about this by the physios at our hospital on a trip in, and boy does it work. From that point on, no more cramps. I would sit with my legs on a chair, flexing whilst watching tv. Ok, this might only be for ten minutes or so, and sometimes an hour, but it really seemed to help. I had had some real nasty cramps in the middle of the night before that and they all stopped. I did the same thing through my second pregnancy and don't remember sitting up in pain once. Good tip.

Ow

Yes I got a couple during my last trimester also it really hurt but probably not as bad as yours. I didn't know lots of other mums to be got cramps I thought it was lack of salt so I began dousing my food in it till bub was borne although I would still get the odd leg cramp. Im sure Mums to be will be sad to read the side effect of pregnancy but happy to read your tips on how to help possibly prevent them!
