Choose you cheese wisely!

Bex17 by Bex17 Speaking(May 2008) (rank 500+)

If your anything like me, the nutrition of your child is of major importance to you. I try to do the best I can and sure enough, I resort to baked beans or a tin of baby food when my long hard work of cooking a healthy meal gets spat

out or thrown across the room.

Often enough I give my son a couple slices of cheese during the day or in a sandwich for lunc h. My advice  to you is to choose your cheese wisely. I recently read in a parneting magazine about the amounts of salt in processed cheese. You think your giving your kids a great source of calcium and sure thats what cheese is but you should also check the sodium which is also known as salt.

According to another mag I read, toddlers between the ages of 1 and 4 should be getting about 200-400mg of sodium in their diet per day. The well known brand of processed slice cheese I give my son has 297mg of sodium per slice and giving him 2 slices before half the day has gone, is a bit of a worry when you take into account the other foods that pass his fussy little lips.

Try a variety of cheeses like Edam or Swiss. Or take the time to check the back of the packet because sometimes when you think your doing the best for your child, the best for your child, can be something a little bit different.

I think the words 'processed cheese' says it all.....maybe check out some of the cheese that are cured in the traaditional way, there are lots of 'natural' alternatives out there that children will eat.  If you start kids out young on things for example, grainy bread, they don't kno any different!

Great advice.  I wonder about fresh cheeses and how much salt is in those.  Where I live we have fresh cheese everyday and some is chuck full of salt so we just soak it in water to rinse it a bit.  I think it is just something they have to put it in because the cheese never tastes salty unless I forget to rinse it *SMILE*  blehhh.  Anyhow..I think I will go check out some where online the benefits of those processed cheeses versus fresh.  I can not remember the last time I bought something like Kraft slices.  I have a little guy that just isn't into the meat thing or other types of foods other than rice, chicken and cheese with bread.  Thank you for the tip!

Great advice. I don't buy processed cheese, instead I grate up some cheese to make it easier for the little ones.
