Fundal Height (Feeling/measuring your pregnant belly)

yummymumy207 by yummymumy207 Speaking(May 2008) (rank 500+)

What exactly is fundal height? when will fundel height usualy be measured? where did the word Fundal Height come from? why is it important? how does your dr or midwife measure it? what if my  Fundal Height  are bigger or smaller than normal will babs be ok?  etc.

these were the questions i was asking my self when i was around 17-19weeks pregnant so here i  go trying to explain lol.....

What exactly is fundal height? Using a measuring tape your dr or midwife will measure from the top of your pubic bone to the top of your uterus (or 'fundus'), The length of tape is then positioned up the middle of your belly, normaly  in centimeters to detect position, measurements, Fundal Height  are bigger or smaller than normal....( your normaly lying down its not meant to be done with you standing or sitting)

when will fundel height usualy be measured? Your doctor or midwife will normally start measuring this during your second trimester, possibly around the 20 week mark, or when you start showing if it is later in pregnancy.

where did the word Fundal Height come from? The medical term for feeling your belly is 'palpating', use to be referred to by dr or midwife as an 'abdominal palpation'. The aim of regularly palpating your belly is to monitor the changing size of your uterus and the growth and position of your baby as the pregnancy progresses. The action of palpating does not hurt your baby because they are surrounded by a cushion of amniotic fluid.

why is it so important? assess your baby's health while in the womb (detect their position, measurements, Fundal Height  are bigger or smaller than normal ). Your fundal height should roughly equal the number of weeks you have progresses in your pregnancy, your dr or midwife usualy  allow a couple of centimeters in either direction normally isn't much of a worry.

how does your dr or midwife measure it? normal using centimeters and a measuring tape and positioned it in the middle of your belly

what if my  Fundal Height  are bigger or smaller than normal will babs be ok? If you are measuring bigger than normal, it could mean a big baby, that you are having twins thats not yet discovered/detected. If you are measuring smaller than normal, it could be a sign that your baby is not growing properly or slowly growing, or has stopped growing. If this happens your doctor or midwife will most likely get you a ultrasound to further check the health and development of your baby.

thanks for reading if you have any ideas on how i can improve my advice please tell me as im shocking with this stuff rofl

i got my resources/infomation from my dr  and midwife also veriuos different sites from 1-2yrs ago

Interesting you should write about this.  I'm in a debate with my gp about my due dates.  By ultrasound, I'm 33 weeks, but by my gp, I'm 37 weeks.  Now, I know I'm big, I also know that I don't keep track of my cycles very well, so anything is possible.  Twins have been ruled out (though it feels like 100 in there!!!!), so that's not the cause.  I know that physically, I'm only small, as is my mum and her family.  My 4 previous babies were smallish, though still hard work pushing them out, so the odds are, I'll have a smaller baby.

The one thing I would like to know though, can your body remember when it is supposed to be what size if you have several pregnancies close together?  Just something that might explain what I'm going through.

Very informative, i remember the midwives doing this at each visit.

I looked up the word Fundus in the dictionary and it says....the base of an organ or the part fartherest away from it's opening......so there you go!
