travelling and security by aircraft

anniebabe by anniebabe Talking(May 2008) (rank 144th)

if you are travelling abroad read pamphlets that are given by your travel agent or booking on line carefully. read the material thoroughly and make your travel less stressful

make sure you know what is restricted and be prepared to go through security scanners.

check both your own

countries airport security and check your other destinations. it can vary.

dont make things more complicated for yourself for example any kind of metal will trigger the scanner. i have a jacket that has hooks i always remove this beforehand and place it in the container. mobiles phones should be placed in container too .

best is to empty your pockets. guys if your wearing a belt remove it, if shoes have metal buckle remove them.

women you are restricted with some make up no more than 100 mls. if the container is 200 mls and its only half full they will confiscate it. this is allowed in suitcase but not on board with hand luggage.

drink bottles are not allowed.nail files tweezers lighters pocket knives scissors all these will trigger the scanner and will be confiscated.

security do have to perform random checks so be prepared that you might be asked to be checked with a wand or even frisked. or tested for any explosive substance. remember this is routine. getting anxious and panicky doesnt help. in fact it will slow down the process and unfortunately might even make security believe that you are hiding something.

see it for what it is a necessity and routine. we all could easily unintentionally carry things that are not allowed but we have to also become more responsible.

thats why i suggest that you "read "the pamphlets carefully and take note.

also be more vigilant with what you carry in your luggage. well meaning relatives sometimes ask you to take presents abroad for your own peace of mind ,make sure you know the person well and "trust " them

try to travel "light" that way you have less to worry about also if you travel light then its a bonus because it gives you more room to "shop overseas"

again when you "shop overseas" make sure that you can bring it into the country its a shame to buy something only to have it confiscated at the airport.

dont go by your last travels because things do change. keep updated and if your not sure ask a travel agent or website. double check with airport security. never question or argue why you cant take this or that they have their reasons and whilst something mighten look harmful to you it is surprising what people can do with little material

after all rubbing two sticks together can "start a fire"

remember noone wants to spend millions of dollars on security but its a fact of life.each individual can make a difference by being more alerted to  what is expected of us as the general public

oh such a shame for your SIL . yeah thats sad when that happens. see what i mean who would think that there would be a problem with a diary!!!!

i know its hard when your buying them to know but at least if you find out afterwards you can always give it as a gift in NZ

cheers annie

Thanks for the great advice Annie,

We're travelling interstate at the end of the year, and you have just reminded me to ring the airport and double check what can and can't be taken as hand luggage!

Re: travelling and security by aircraft

yes and its important to be kept updated either through the internet or pamphlets because security gets stricter and can change as the need be.

there is no reason for a holiday to be ruined because things wernt looked into properly. sometimes you are allowed to post or ship items that you arent allowed to take on the plane.

its always best though to check with each countries reliable source rather than guess work or heresay through word of mouth.

some things are correct through word of mouth but other things are sometimes misquoted so you need to have the proper facts.

cheers annie
