Question:
Does anyone have any kids with ADHD? How do you approach the situation?

My Advice:

Hi there

I have a 9 year old with ADHD and other disabilities. My son was dignosed at the age

of 4 and medicated at age of 6 with medication. I wanted to make sure he knew what adhd was so I bought him some books to read which explained it to him but in a way which was non frightening. You can find a whole list of them or I can mail you a copy of mine depending on age of the child. finding a support group is good if you are a parent with a child with adhd as this is great for advice and support. Regarding explaining it to family and friends, well again books but also if you know what it is yourself then it is often easie for others to understand. If it's your child you need to inform-keep it simple and non jargon based. Tell them that a lot of children have this and it isn't a disease, it makes them unique and stronger. Saying something like 'you know you wanted to know why you do this....it is because of this.....'

They will go through various emotions-anger, the why me issue, they have probably felt useless and angry for soome time but weren't sure why. Make sure they know that you don't blame them for what they do and tell them at least now we know that it is the adhd and not because the are bad. They will need confidence building techniques and it may be a good idea to find other children who they can talk to about it and how it makes them feel. There are hundreds of famous people who have adhd and it can give them drive and ambition which can make them strive in areas and be extremely successful because they have adhd.

let me know if I can help you with anything else and remember-adhd is a disability but your child is still the same person just with an added extra. No-one is to blame especially not the child, stay strong and keep united together.

hugs and hope

Great advice and support. Children and adults that have ADHD, OR ADD do get classed as having a disability.. Why do you think their is parents in some states that are quick to have their child diagnosed , so then the government can pay them a Disability carers allowance.. and then 9 times out of 10, most parents will sell their kids medication to suit their lifestyles.. But saying all that i do take my hat off to the parents that do support their children and partners that have this condition..

ADD and ADHD are definately disabilities. they stop you being able to function to the popular standard this is life. sadly my whole family household is like this. my boys have ADD and my daughter and I had ADHD. its great fun but.

We are not medicated except my hubby as he cannot contrl it at all. he is really bad. my daughter I am able to control with diet and so is my son to a degree. me I am controled with my other medication for my bipolar and other things.

Re: Approaching the situation of ADHD

I like to think of ADD or ADHD as a different ability, not a disability.  Most people I know who have been diagnosed with this different way of thought process, are energetic; fun; bright; talented; active people who I really enjoy being around.  It can be frustrating and hard to understand where they are coming from sometimes; however the same can be said of everyone.
