gastro doing the rounds in australia

anniebabe by anniebabe Talking(June 1st) (rank 160th)

gastro is doing the rounds in australia at the moment

make sure you keep fluids up like water black weak tea (no milk) castrolyte or gatorade.

castrolyte can be bought at chemists but if you dont like the taste gatorade is just as good if your "vomiting and

have diarrhoea" you need to replace the potassium that is lost from the body

it takes at least a week to get better. just because you think the vomiting and diarrohoea has eased off and you think you have just about depleted all that is to deplete dont make the mistake and go "to normal food"

you need to eat toast (no butter) dry biscuits and boiled rice with lemon.

YOU CANNOT HAVE DAIRY PRODUCTS AND STAY AWAY FROM COFFEE!!!

do go to the doctor to rule out anything else but if its gastro doctors wont treat it with anything unless you get dehydrated which will require hospitalisation

it also requires plenty of rest!!! i know thats hard to do sometimes but if you dont want it to reoccur you must rest !! if you do work you need to take at least 3 days off and rest plenty

i am actually going through it at the moment . i still went to the doctor but there wasnt anything further she could do for  me than i was already doing!!!(i could have saved myself the money) but i thought it best to be safe just in case it was something else.

so its best to go to the doctor just to rule out anything else possible.

my immune system must have been very low (i do have my period)  because i havent had gastro since 2003!!

when you are better you need to slowly ease into the food again dont just tuck into a steak . gradually introduce foods starting with soft foods.

i hope this advice will help someone

cheers annie

Re: gastro doing the rounds in australia

I am wondering if this is the same stomach flu that made (or perhaps still making the rounds) here in the U.S. May I ask what symptoms there are with this and how long it lasts?

My family caught the stomach flu the day after Christmas. We were at our in-laws and there were 6 adults and 4 kids and 2 infants (my twins were 5 months at the time) and in a matter of 2 days we were all heaving. It was awful. Thankfully the vomiting only lasted 24 hours. After you clear 24 hours, you're pretty sure the vomiting is over with. Of course the recovery was tough on the body.

Re: gastro doing the rounds in australia

the doctor told me it would take a good week to recover because she said that the cells get infected.

the time it takes to recover really depends on a few factors whether you get a severe case or mild case

eg my son was mild mine was severe

also it depends on whether you rest up body has more chance of recovery and also the food (diet) you eat (intake ) for that first week

for example it can flare up again so dairy products are to be avoided. in fact boiled rice with lemon black tea and toast was recommended by my doctor(she is australian/ enlish ) my friends and relatives had already bombarded me wth this advice

doctor also said introduce foods slowly and light foods like soup. she said dont eat a steak suddenly even if you are feeling better.

i was very bad for the whole night on saturday night it subsided sunday but flared again sunday night and monday by tuesday afternnon i was feeling better but still didnt go to work on doctors advice

i went back wednesday afternnon (even though doc had wanted me resting then as well) when i got home wednesday night i was feeling very weak and veins were popping on hands and were a dark blue colour "i over did it" ) so i rested thursday but worked thursday night started eating normal on friday.

sometimes its better to be cautious because my neighbour has had it for a few weeks. but she wasnt as cautious with her diet

hope this helps

Re: gastro doing the rounds in australia

so sad when children have to be hospitalised its not pleasant at its best let alone to be hospitalised .

i wasnt expecting it either but my neighbour had it the funny thing was i didnt get it when she was at her peak.

i dont blame her because if it wasnt her it could have been anywhere!!

public places can be worse only because you dont know who has what. as a doctor onc told me you only have to touch the door handle that smenones touched to get a virus.

Hi honey,

Thanks for this BUT did you know that the latest research suggests that yogurt is okay to use, researchers found that using yogurt helps to protect the stomach and bowel linings . . . Sorry mate but I just thought that I would point this out.

Cheers Kellz

Re: gastro doing the rounds in Australia

fair enough its just the doctor just told me and that was yesterday to stay off all dairy products i know that no dairy products has been the golden rule.

i dont dispute what you are saying research  is always coming up with new things, was this reported in the medical journal? without being too sceptical everything lately is  "the latest research" you and i could be the latest research. the latest research was on the today show just this morning saying apostive attitude doesnt make a difference for cancer patients they had dawn fraser on the show who claims otherwise and as she pointed out this will hold until other research says otherwise i have a friend who has overcome breast cancer its been ten years and hers was very severe a nurse who had been through it told her how important postive thinking was and my friend says that with other therapies saved her life

i combine what my mother has taught me over the years with what my own treating doctors have told me and i find it works

cheers annie

Re: gastro doing the rounds in australia

Thanks for that advice, its also doing the rounds in UK and Ruby just had it. She required hospitalisation for dehydration. If you cant get bubs to drink any water at all, give tiny amounts in a syringe, even if they spit half of it out, if you keep doing it, it'll get their fluid levels up. And this is far preferrable to IV fluids in hospital! Em x

Re: gastro doing the rounds in australia

oh i so feel for her many years ago when my neice was a baby she also was hospitalised. i was about 19 at the time , she was on a drip and it was heartbreaking watching my sister in tears as she had to go home and her little girl crying after her for her mummy.

yeah fluids are so important the syringe is an excellent idea for babies

Re: gastro doing the rounds in australia

i meant to add that you might think your better after 2 days but the cells are actually infected so it takes a good week for your cells to come back to normal .

so even if you think you have depleted it all , it can flare up again

cheers annie

Re: gastro doing the rounds in australia

Editing your advice to include more information does not remove comments and votes that are already on your article.  Editing is actually a great thing to do because sometimes you may catch typos that you didn't see before. Or you may have a picture or other info that would be great for your article.
