how to find time to do housework -epecailly if suffering depression or have new born in house

apwed by apwed Speaking(August 2006) (rank 500+)

I have suffered depression on and off for few years now and not mainly post baby depression more because of things that happened in my past because of this i find it hard to get motivated to do the house work and find excuses so i never have time... Plus when you have new born you can find never have time too..Recently i have found a great way to get me up and doing the house work.. That is by using the oven timer i set the timer for hour and use that as my thing I say to myself that i can at least get hours house work in and can at least find an hour out of the day to do some! I also find that it makes me move quick and get lots done because i want the house to look like its had an hours work put into it, some days i even use this technique by after my hour is up I put the timer on for another hour and use this to rest for hour so that when it goes off i got no excuse not to get up and put another hour on the timer to get another hours housework done because ive had an hour of rest and doing nothing.

so if you are struggling too to get the housework done give the timer ago you maybe amazed how much you get done just by finding an hour in each day

good luck apwed.

Great idea. I have found that setting a timer for each room (on average about 20mins per room) gets the cleaning done very fast.

This timer thing sounds awesome. Best I give it a try.

Thank you.

My timer is my best friend.

Love my timer. So do my kids - is great for them because they have a definate end to doing a particular job.

Also I use my timer for my breaks. I know it seems weird, but 15 mins can melt into nothing, but put the timer on and my cuppa is finished and I'm waiting for the "ding" to get back to work. Try it.

Being strict on the timer
I find that if I am strict with the timer I am more productive.  Strict in that when the timer goes I cannot carry on....if i do carry on, more often than not I will start to flag, then will be less likely to complete the job, but if i do the timer a second time i will finish with good time and have enjoyed the cleaning/tidying/sorting experience once again.
Peace

The timer idea is a great one...
I usually try as hard as i can to stay on top of my housework. bar the laundry! it usually gets forgotten about and i jsut absolutely lack the motivation to go and lucg out the portacot etc. but everyhere and there i decide to havea day off. a day off work, a day off studying, a day off figuring out next weeks bills. and the next day i find im a week behind. and then i usually end up procrastianting because it is debilatating to find my home in such a state all voer again! so i use the happy children messy floor philosophy until i abosultely MUST do my housework. and then my husband feels sorry for me and helps :)

The timer idea is a great one...

Laundry is about the one and only thing that i get done - except when you have few rainy days in a row that makes it hard to get motivated to wash (especially when you don't have a dryer)

my hubby at times is my biggest problem because he works afternoon shift so is home during the day the best time to get house work done, but it's he sleep time after working late until 11am so i generally sneak around keep quite and get nothing done and then when he wakes up he is relaxing before work or wants to go look at something somewhere and wants me to join him doing either...

so ive found the timer works good as i say no my hour timer is on after that is finished we can do what you want but not until my hour is up.....

I too use a timer
Great minds think allike.  I too have depression, I used to be very house proud and a neat freak, I still have the desire but lack the motivation, so I use the timer too.  I can get so many things done in such a small amount of time.  My bub is on bottles so even in the 40 seconds that a bottle is in the microwave is time I spend "Doing", I can get 3 bottles washed in 40 seconds, amazing the sense of accomplishment you get when racing yourself and doing well.  It does motivate you to do more and improve on your "personal best".

Tick, tick, tick.

Timer for motivation
I love your idea. Sometimes when I have to clean a room that's very very messy I get overwhelmed just by looking at it and sometimes I put it off. But I think breaking down the work by doing whatever I can for an hour would help. And after that hour I can feel a sense of accomplishment. Thanks!

Timer for motivation

that's my biggest problem the room overwelms me ive tried going around the room and making lists of what needs to be done and cross things off as i go this works sometimes but not allways have found the timer helps a lot better

I have also tried to put into practice of what i do with my 5yr old to get her to tidy her room at different times i will say go clean 10 things in your room and figure it will work for me if i do 10things in a room when im there as well

I still have my few weeks were it barely gets done and don't have the motivation as i let other things distract me but after few weeks i shake myself and force myself to do it all again

Ive seen that british show where the two cleaning ladies go around and clean up other houses and i get tell myself hey im not that bad!
