Mosquito bites and Cat Scratches

Anonymous Author (June 2008)

Re: Scratching
Asked by Rukia

Question:

how can i stop my son from scratching....... he has cuts all over his back and leg from mozzies and the cat and he wont let them heal. i have tried bandaids, tea tree oil, paw paw

cream, he has no nails so i dont know how he is cutting the skin. he is only 6 and it is starting to scar.

its driving me and my partner insane.

My Advice:

Hi there,

I am so sorry to read about your poor son . .  My thoughts are that your son may be allergic to the mosquito's. My eldest daughter is allergic to them and has been since she was born, poor girl would scream and cry because she itched so very much.

My GP finally suggested that we give her some anti-histamine to help, but only at night! I would suggest that you try doing the same, we found Phenergan Tablets were the best. They are so tiny that your son shouldn't have any problems and they come in 5mg one's which you can purchase over the counter.

Also ofter bathing or showering your son the best way to dry his itchy legs and back is to do it with a hair dryer set on the coolest cycle. Your poor son will become more itchy after bathing and the towels will only aggravate him, avoid tight fitting clothes and Pajama's and remember that until his sores have healed cotton will be best.

As for the cat scratches I suggest an antibiotic cream such as Detol which can also be purchased over the counter. My thoughts however are that once the mosquito bites settle down then so will the cat scratches. If the cat scratches are very red and angry then it is advisable to take your son to the local doctor as cats can carry a germ in their claws which can aggravate our skin. This is uncommon but you should still be aware of it . .

Good luck and thanks for reading . .

Cheers Kellz

Thanks for the advice kellzacar.

My kids are allergic to mozzies my daughter more than my son, (runs on hubbys side) he also picks his sores too. like he will fall over at school and i have to keep bandaids on them to let them heal or they just get picked.

will try the anti h's tonight. wil have a look to see if the ones i have are ok for him.

tthanks again

Great advice. With the cat scratches,, i agree it would be a good idea to take your child to the  doctors, if it gets inflamed and spreads, as that is classed as a allergy.. MY caitlyn is allergic to cats, and she needs cream from the gp when she is scratched..

Hi Caz,

Thanks for your feedback . .  Cat scratches can be tricky at times so if in doubt its always best to consult a GP. I hope Caitlyn doesn't get any more scratches . .

Cheers Kellz
