Sight words. How to help your child remember them

Sight words. How to help your child remember them

Sight words are a wonderful thing. It is also the first things our 6 year olds learn.

What’s a sight word you ask? Well they are the fundamentals of our language. There are many lists that

I have found stating these are the sight words and there are many words as well.

I am going to use the list I have in my sons home reader(junior) by kluwell their web site is www.kluwell.com if you child doesn’t have a home reader to record in then these are cheap and great to use.

According to this book these are the most used words and we have used as sight words in my Childs class. There are 100 of them:

A for is out there about from it over they after get just people this all go like play three an going little ran time and good man said to are too as two at up back us be very because got me saw was big had morning school water but have mother see we by he my she went came her night so were can him no some what could his not soon when day home of that will did I off the with do if on their would dog in one them yes down into our then you.

Now getting your child to do and remember them is the fun part. I made mine up with cardboard bought at the news agency. It took a lot of work cutting drawing up and all of that and sadly after all that hard work they were wreaked. So I am going to make them again but I am going to use my lovely laminator. This way they won’t get wreaked so easily.

Each night with your kids hold up these cards and help them sound it out (this is how we were told by my Childs teacher) after awhile they get used to the letters and word formations. If you keep it up with your kids every night a few at a time they will be fluent in no time. My 4 year old already recognizes some words.

Perseverance is the key too and not to get angry when the Childs struggles. I still struggle with words. Constant praise as well works wonders as well. I had a star chart for all the words my children get right the get a star, sticker or a tick. When they got to certain amounts they got a special something.

I have found the sooner you start at this the better they are at school and less worried about getting things right, it also helps in you finding out weather your child needs extra help.

Remember to keep school and educational stuff fun or your kids will start to dislike school. Make it a game. All kids love games.

very cool.  I never knew that there were words that were so key.  I'm going to try this with my baby girl!
