Inexpensive ideas to have fun with the kiddies...

Jessgore by Jessgore Young Parent(June 2008) (rank 3rd)

Not working, short on cash, need a day out with the kids?????

I am not earning any extra cash at the moment and with the price of gas (petrol) these days it is hard to spring for both the gas, and fun things to do..  But

just thinking for the little ones it is not that hard to actually find things that amuse them, outside the house to get some fresh air…Here are a few Ideas’ for you that my son and I have enjoyed over the past few weeks…

Feeding the ducks or seagulls depending on where you are, either way the kids love to feed birds….   Save up the crusts of your bread or any bread that you would not eat yourself and just pop it in a plastic bag in the fridge until you think you have enough.. Then go to the local pond, lake or where ever you know there are hungry birds and let the kids throw the bread…  Simple cheap and you get a few good laughs too…

Machines.. If you have a little boy like mine who is totally interested in all things with a motor, take them to watch houses being built, of course stand at a safe distance.. There was some work being down at our local park a few days ago, and we sat and watched a machine dig a whole, then to my sons delight a truck came along to haul away the dirt..  Okay two hours was a bit much for me but you take a long a sandwich and a drink and your set. Your child has gotten to watch something they enjoy, and you have a happy child.

Pet Shops,  I take him to the pet stores and if you are able to find a good one you’ll see lots of interesting things, like turtles, lizards, and yes even spiders….  I actually saw one here in Canada selling Blue Tongue Lizards…

Fire stations,  I am going to call the fire station that we pass often when we go to feed the ducks, and ask if they would not mind showing my son the fire truck.  He is right into them at the moment, and if I can organize a time to go down and have a look, I know my son will enjoy it.. What fire man can say no to a three year old.

I have found many a thing that can be done on the cheap here in Canada…

Apple Picking, is another one, you pay for a plastic bag and you can pick as many apples as you can to put in the bag, also if you find a good one they often have animals for the kids to have a look at.. You don’t even have to go apple picking if you don’t want to you can just go see the animals…

Local Farms, Stud Farms, you can usually find them in the phone book ring them and just ask if you can come and have a look at their animals…   Last year, and we plan to do it again this year, my son and I went to a local farm that, hate to say it but you get to pick your own cow for meat. I did not do this as I prefer to live thinking that meat comes in neat little packages at the supermarket..  Anyway we were able to walk around the farm looking at the cows, and they had a few goats, horses and some sheep.

Also looking through your local paper sometimes you might find parks holding small events, where often have things you can go and see for free or a very small fee..

All very easy cheap things to do…

Good luck and enjoy your vacations…

good advice except the pet store. where i live a lot of the pet store have a sign on the door saying we are not a zoo. if you are not looking for a pet please dont come in. it sounds mean i know but many children run about and tap the fish tanks which stress the fish and annoy the birds and cats and reptiles.

Great advice Jess, most weekends we are always doing something with the kids and 9 times out of 10 we don't spend money.....  We feed ducks every Saturday, there is a huge lake next door to their swimming school, the other one the kids love is bush walking. Kite flying is another they love, but just going to the park is my kids fave xxx

Awesome advice Jess! We do this kind of stuff all the time out here - even when we have the spare cash there isn't much to do out here!

great advice.

I also want to add the fire station for those who love fire trucks. My son just loves seeing the fire trucks so it is still a regular destination for us when I pick him from pre school.

There is also the library. Though I must say I waited until my son was 3 years old.  I got him his own library card so we take a trip there and take 3-4 books home with us. The library visit itself is best kept to a minimum since my son's volume control is only recently functioning. About 15 minutes is plenty of time and I usually just grab the books I think he'll be interested in, while he looks at one or two interesting ones.

oopss. I see that you have the fire station idea there too. My eyes happened to miss that section.

another idea is to fly a kite! :-) It's so much fun.. you fly the kite, and your child can "chase" it around. Tiring out toddlers is always a great thing.

Library's are a great Idea, I think the only reason I did not mention it is because I suck at taking books back at the right time, and end up owning them tons of money... :)
But yes it is a great Idea, and I have been toying with the idea of Taking Francis... I think he would love to see all the books.. My only problem is when it is time to give them back will he part with them.. :)
