How to Avoid the Diaper Explosion |
|
|
From my blog Cliff Notes for the Stay at Home Dad
Being a new parent has many lessons trown at you... one of the things thrown at you is poop! It took a while to get my technique down. But, after about 4 days at home with
the baby, (and 40 diapers later) I got it down.
If your new to parenting a,nd diapers, here's some diaper changing tips that I have picked up in the last few months:
- Find a diaper size that fits right... but is not to big and not to small. Too small, and all the poop will overflow and explode out of the diaper onto everything...everything. Get one too big, and it'll leak out all over the place.
- In the beginning, you'll need some practice getting the diaper on right, if your like me and never changed a diaper before, practice is a must. Just make sure that before you start you have all the proper diaper changing supplies ready.
- You'll need: diapers, lots of wipes (I prefer Pampers wipes because they are moister that most), Butt Paste, Plastic Bags (for easy disposal of dirty wipes and diapers)
- First get the clothes as far away from the diaper area as possible. Undo the diaper but do not remove totally. Now grab a foot, or both feet, and lift the baby up to reveal the mess. Keeping the diaper in its place, use the soiled diaper to wipe of as much poop as possible without spreading poop around. Now grab some wipes and wipe firmly from front to back, you will use several wipes. put the really filthy wipes in the diaper and fold it over on itself.
- Keep the baby on top of the folded over diaper, because you never know when another mess is coming! Grab some more wipes and get in all the little cracks and folds and get all the poop and pee off.
- You need to be mindful of the tabs that hold the diaper on... they will stick to everything, and if your not careful, soon you will have poop flung all over you, the baby, and the floor!
- If you notice some redness on the butt or anywhere else, now is the time to rub on some Butt Paste. However if wipe thoroughly and don't let your kid sit in a soiled diaper too long, you may never need to worry about diaper rash. Luckily we haven't... yet.
- Now get out the new diaper and get ready for the switch. You need to be quick! Grab the soiled diaper and wipes and use the tabs to seal up the mess and throw it in the bag. Open up the new diaper and slip it under the baby and quickly close it up. The baby's legs will be kicking all over the place so just try to get the diaper on and in the right place. After its on you will have time to adjust it make sure its on tight!
- Mostly just be quick, keep the baby coverd, and watch out for the diaper tabs...they can get you into real trouble!
Well that's just how I do it, but I have a girl. Now if you have a boy... you need to worry about getting sprayed in the face. If you have a better way, please, let me know!
