Project Give-Away

tracey by tracey Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 7th)

Want to get rid of stuff? There are many ways to do it. You can have a garage sale. There’s also the option of local non-profit pick-ups and drop off locations. You can give things away to family and friends. But there is one thing you may not have

considered; offering a handful of small toys and books to your local small retailer. Like most parents, I frequent a few local service shops on a weekly basis; the cleaners, the drug store, the photo lab, a mail center, etc. I noticed that the mail center I use there is a small basket of toys kept at the front counter for children that visit. Who knew that something so simple could keep my kids busy just long enough to get my errand done without any complaints or aggravation? I briefly spoke to the woman who owns the place and commented how much I appreciate her attempt at keeping my kids occupied. I asked her if I could bring in a few more things for her collection. She was delighted (all of her children are grown now so there isn’t an abundance of toys at her home any more). It made me think about all the other places I go in my daily routine and how much nicer it would be if they all kept some toys around to entertain the kids. I have offered to bring in baskets of our “extras” to a few businesses and have been met with enthusiasm by the shop owners. So, the next time you want to shed some of your playthings, offer them to someone who might really appreciate keeping the kids at bay while parents take care of business.

some places say no

My step-mum once offered toys to her local doctor surgery as they had none and the receptionist quite rudely so no  i don't need to have to clean up that mess and steriloze the toys all the time i get lots more things i need to get done with my time! this put my step-mum off offering again

so you may find you come accross a few places like this in your travels... but hopefully does'nt put you off

animal shelters too!
Some of the cuddle toys, blankets, towels and balls are appreciated at the animal shelters or animal rescue too! Some things that may not look new enough to gift to a business might be appreciated by a homeless puppy or kitten!
