Semi-Homemade

yummymumy207 by yummymumy207 Speaking(June 2008) (rank 500+)

this is something personal that i have learnt recently as my niece, had to go to hossy(hospital) because i learnt a very good lessioni thought it would be good to share what i learnt

my niece is nearly 11months she has had home made baby food about 95%of her life

as we all thought and were taught that typical home mades (home made baby food )is better and only use bought baby food from the supermarket once in a while etc but now im thinking otherwise we learnt a very big/scarey thing home made baby food its not always best =/i know some of you will question why so i will explain,

my niece got very bad food pisioning/flu,because she hasnt built up a immune system yet
so we asked how could this happens we were puzzled we had know idea o we asked  the dr and nurse that was helping my niece  they were so nice they just said in homemade baby food there isnt much bacteria because poeple are so conchess about it
and they said a few more things i jst cant remember everything
so they suggested to us for the future everything in moderation (i thought durr why didnt any one tell us this )and
bought baby food is not as bad for them as some poeple make out them to be in our days as it has added goodness like preservitives etc which can help with your immune system etc
so now i believe bought baby food has more advantages than i could of ever thought of!

the dr and nurse suggested at first if you dont like the idea of bought baby food from the supermarket and preffer home made baby food maybe you could combine them two this is called semi-homemade if that helps ease your mind and that way your babys getting the goodness it needs from bought baby food from the supermarket and home made baby food to help growth, immune system etc

heres a quick and easy recipey  Semi-Homemade  that might help you think of ways to combine bought baby food from the supermarket  and home made baby food

1 jar of apples (bought baby food from the supermarket )

2-3 tablespoons of mashed banana

and then just combine the two

Re: Semi-Homemade

Ive never known this,we are just about to stop buying baby food and star making our own,i think also that people dont understand you never add salt or seasonings to baby food their tummies just cant hack it.I know plenty of mums that have hot chips or a cheeseburger, and break off a little for their bub not considering how much additives is in it.

Im glad you got your neice to the hospital and she want too sick...:)

I hope Winnie is right and you mean probiotics and not preservatives....i don't think preservatives would be very good for your baby.  Personally, i think, although some brought baby food can be convenient, homemade is best where ever possible.

Re: Semi-Homemade

I cannot find the site grrrrr, but I was researching "probiotics" and me thinks, that certain baby foods have these in naturally. Could this be what you mean, rather than preservatives. Many baby food manufacturers are looking to add them now or advertise the idea that they occur naturaly in their foods.

Personaly I still think home made is best, but if looking to boost the immune system and build a stronger gut to protect against food gastric probs, I personaly think that natural yoghurt is still the best.

I did feed Organic Pre Bought meals, for when we were pushed for time. I think as you say moderation on everything.

Luv Winnie.xxxx

Re: Semi-Homemade

I think it comes down to how the food is prepared, the type of food, how it is stored, the age of the child and the health of the child at the time.

Store bought baby foods contain preservatives, which aren't always good and can cause reactions in some kids.  Homemade you know exactly what is in it and can adjust it to your childs needs and tastes.

I also know that the smell of some store bought baby foods can make me gag, so I know my baby ain't going to like it.  Eeeewwwww!  I can't remember which one it was, but it stank like a cattle feed lot! lol.

Re: Semi-Homemade

What in particular did your niece eat that caused food poisoning?  The taste of most bought baby food is enough to stop me giving it to kids, it rarely tastes like 'real' food.  I like to know exactly what is in the food I eat, and what my son eats, though this is very interesting.  Can you add any more detail top explain what the doctor meant by bought foods being better because of the preservatives, as I have never heard of them helping your immune system before.

Re: Semi-Homemade

Hi there,

Thanks for you article, I can honestly say that NONE of my three girls ever have had brought baby food. . .  I am one of these mums that cooks everything and my children have all thrived and have great appetites . . My youngest now 2 has multiple food intolerance's and allergies and this made preparing food very difficult BUT I have always managed. I would rather know what my children are eating than give then food full of preservatives and other chemicals . .

Cheers Kellz
