Relaxing even in the middle of a storm.

mumma6 by mumma6 Speaking(June 2008) (rank 500+)

I used to be incredibly scared  of storms ,bad weather, tense situations and fear of failing.I would become sweaty and hot ,i would begin to shake and become dizzy.Even the thought of bad weather approaching. If i would see grey clouds ahead that was enough for me to breakout in a

cold sweat becoming shaken up and out of sorts.

During one of these situations i would sometimes hide underneath furniture, asking my hubby at the time to sing loudly to keep the noise from getting to me too loudly.I remember one time i was sitting in the hall, with a blanket over my head humming roy orbison songs to myself,i looked like a total fruit cake.

Another situation was when my mother who had taken me shopping at kmart informed me i was going for a job that was it,i shook ,became hot and nearly broke my mum,s wrist trying to get away from her.How could she do that try and get me a job the anxiety of just the thought of me working, not that i fear work just having to be bombarded by many people wanting my attention that scares me.Just like being a parent also means alot of people wanting your undivided attention.

I also have the same thing happen during parties or events as i cant keep everybody happy .

I made a freind called "joanne" she taught me a method of relaxing after witnessing me acting quite weirdly when a storm was due in our area that afternoon. She told me to breath in deeply and say the wrd relax to myself...what!!.Anyway doing it as i trusted her it worked it truely did.So this is how it goes.

1) Sit in a quiet place in the house or your office or whereevr is suitable for you.

2)Breath in deeply, in through your nose without sucking in too much air, dont explode your lungs.

3)breath back out your mouth, and as you do say the word "RELAX"as you do.

4)Repeat the process, each time concentrating on the outward breath. As you do you will feel the tenseness leaving you.

5) Then enjoy your day as it wi;ll be better, try it .It works .

Ive had storm phobia for nearly 10 years and after doing this just before im  fearing an event or a situation it helps so much i fel i could be caught up in tornado and i would blink an eyelid.

i used this during child birth and ive never experienced it in a better way,no gas ,no stitches and baarely any pain.I recommend this highly .

Hi there,

Helping our children to overcome fear is GREAT as it helps to set them up for bigger and more positive coping strategies in the future. Thanks for a great article . .

Cheers Kellz

Thanks!  This is a tehcnique I learned in calm birth classes and i still use today when I can't sleep or I'm uptight.  A few minutes of calm breathing (through the nose, long outward breath) can leave me feeling calm and somehow energised.  Glad it helps you too!

Great tip, I don't have any anxiety problems, but I will try to remember this just in case something changes... Plus this is a great way to try and help others if the situation arises.
