Food, behaviour and a change for the better

champers1964 by champers1964 Speaking(July 2nd) (rank 500+)

Im going to repeat some advice I thought may help another member with children with behaviour issues. I hope this may help you, just realise you are not alone and you will get though it. Hopefully with some of the advice already given, my advice and support from family and

friends you will not only survive but enjoy your children.

I have a son who at times is hyper and angry, mood swings etc. I know that his behaviour is related to his diet.

Any food colours should be completely eliminated from your childrens diets so should any flavour enhancers (msg). At the very least. Do not give the children any fizzy drinks, cordials, flavoured milks. Try and stick to home cooked (no take away) meals with water, pure juice, and plain milk.

IRoutines are also vital in managing busy kids and games that are physical with set rules and boundries also help. Some of these children just react to chaos more quickly so need a very structured calm life style.

An excellent site providing great information in relation to food is http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info/

Take a look at this site it provides fantastic info on the affects of food additives and the impact they have on behaviour of our children.

Some info provided on this site includes the following info.......

Some additives that can cause problems is ARTIFICIAL COLOURS (in sweets, drinks, takeaways, cereals and many processed foods)

102 tartrazine,104 quinoline yellow,107 yellow 2G, 110 sunset yellow, 122 azorubine, 123 amaranth, 124 ponceau red, 127 erythrosine, 128 red 2G, 129 allura red, 132 indigotine,133 brilliant blue, 142 green S, 151 brilliant black, 155 chocolate brown

NATURAL COLOUR 160b annatto (in yoghurts, icecreams, popcorn etc, 160a is a safe alternative)

PRESERVATIVES 200-203 sorbates (in margarine, dips, cakes, fruit products) 210-213 benzoates (in juices, soft drinks, cordials, syrups, medications) 220-228 sulphites (in dried fruit, fruit drinks, sausages, and many others) 280-283 propionates (in bread, crumpets, bakery products) 249-252 nitrates, nitrites (in processed meats like ham)

SYNTHETIC ANTIOXIDANTS (in margarines, vegetable oils, fried foods, snacks, biscuits etc) 310-312 Gallates 319-320 TBHQ, BHA, BHT (306-309 are safe alternatives)

FLAVOUR ENHANCERS (in tasty foods) 621 MSG 627, 631, 635 disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, ribonucleotides

These do not just cause hyperactivity, but cause anger, mood swings, irritability, bad sleep, defiance, attitude in fact lots of issues parents face everyday which we blame the child for. Just focusing on the diet can change so much.

My son is partial failsafe. It's great. His behaviour is soooo much better. Really I think all this artificial crap should be banned from foods or more parents told of how it effects their kids. I'm sure there'd be less discipline troubles!!!!

I agree with you, and so does the European  Food Standards Agency !

The FSA call for manufacturers to remove six artificial colours by the end of 2009. These are tartrazine (E102), quinoline yellow (E104), sunset yellow (E110), carmoisine (E122), ponceau 4R (E124) and allura red (E129).

These colours and the preservative sodium benzoate (E211) were linked to hyperactivity in a study by Southampton University, which found they made primary school children become distracted and fail a computer attention test.

The researchers estimated that 30 per cent of cases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) would be prevented if companies removed the colours.

4 out of 6 of these colours are already banned in the US, but absolutely no action is being taken in Australia!!!!!

Hi there,

One of the BIGGEST ones that I think ALL children should be kept away from is 952 (Aspartame) . .  This chemical is a artificial sweetener and it can lead to may behavioural problems and even some medical ones such as depression and headaches . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: Food, behaviour and a change for the better

I agree I think its appauling and I never buy diet drinks, dispite that fact I hate the after taste.

Its interesting to note that Coca-Cola is phasing out Sodium benzoate, also known as E21, an additive that has been linked to damage to DNA and hyperactivity in children. It is used to stop fizzy drinks going mouldy.

Coca-Cola said it had begun withdrawing the additive from Diet Coke in January in response to consumer demand for more natural products. By the end of the year no can or bottle will contain E211.

However there is no discussion regarding aspartame. Aspartame has been linked to brain tumours and other cancers.

Australia is not following the UK so we here will continue to have our softdrinks with what will become a banned product in the UK!
