be extra careful when sleeping with babies

apwed by apwed Speaking(August 2006) (rank 500+)

Just wanted to let everyone know what has happened with one of the ladies from the school's family baby..

It happened over  week ago now, the dad fell asleep with the 2 month old baby in his arm asleep and while the dad slept the baby slipped so it

face was under the dad's arm and has suffocated to death

I know it is something that is commonly done is to sleep when the baby is in your arms asleep without realsing something like this could happen..

You hear warnings not to have the baby sleep in bed with you in case you roll over on top of it when you are asleep but you never here that it could be as simple as the baby slipping under your arms so please try not to full asleep with your baby

thanks apwed

Precautions when co-sleeping

Safety is very important when co-sleeping or thinking about co-sleeping. Parents (mom or dad) should never co-sleep when they are on any kind of sleep aides, depressants: drugs and/or alcohol and/or if the parent is obese. Also, the bed, or any area where you and baby would be sleeping is a big cause for concern too. The little gaps between the bed and the wall are a big hazard. Baby's legs, arms, or head can get caught in them. Too much fluffly blankets and pillows are also hazardous. When sleeping with infants, there should not be too many things on the bed, not even stuffed toys.

Co-sleeping benefits the baby, but of course safety is first and foremost.

Always be carefull
I've always been carefull with my girl, and i always have made sure that myself and my partner have never let ourselves fall asleep while miss3 is awake, especially if she's in our arms. Sorry to hear about the loss of your friends baby.

Co sleeping works for us.

I know myself that when my daughter was a baby there was many times she slept in our bed as I would fall asleep feeding her as she was up every two hours for asleep and we never had a problem, i was always aware she was there and never rolled over..

But i never knew that it could be as easy as the baby slipping through your arms so your arm can suffocate them we are only warned about the sleeping in bed in case you roll on them but not that just sleeping with them in your arms is a danger

I glab co-sleeping is working for you as I know it can seem to help a lot too as it brings the kids more closer as the kids feel more loved and secure
