Parenting Guide: Fun Essay Writing for Kids |
|
|
Essay writing is quite a complex activity to teach to children. As most children love to write on whatever they can with whatever they can get their hands on, writing set of words in a logical manner is a different story.
But essay
writing is not that difficult to teach. Like the times when children have books drawn in and walls plastered with black magic marker, teaching them to write simple essay is a good means to panel out their creativity.
Doubting that it might be too early to teach them essay writing? It’s never too early for knowledge acquisition. Writing sharpens minds – let children get ahead.
A parent might also think that making their children learn to write essay is way more difficult when they were still learning how to add and subtract. Well, have no worries at all. Here is a simple guide to teaching children how to write simple essay, without the trouble of having to write it for him/her.
- First, the need to explain to the child that the basic layout of an essay is quite simple – introduction, body and conclusion. For this, the parent and child need to brainstorm a bit.
- Instruct the child to begin writing down every topic idea that comes to his/her mind - regardless of whether they all make sense or not. The catch is that the children can’t stop writing as another idea pops out from the other.
- Once you have a topic, it’s time to create an idea cluster. Have the child draw a small circle at the center of a blank sheet of paper with the essay title written in it. Using shapes and colorful writing materials will make essay writing learning more fun to them.
- Then let the child connect the body paragraph ideas to the main circle by drawing out straight lines. Let the child decide ideas written inside the circles are connected to other circles of ideas. Keep going until all the ideas are organized.
- Finally, the actual writing process. While a parent must not write the paper for the child, the parent can explain how an essay is formatted. Parent’s guidance is always essential for speedy and efficient essay learning. Don’t forget to praise them after the activity has been done. Recognition will boost children’s confidence to write more, next time, on their own.
Unlike any other parent- child activity, essay writing is a worthwhile, fun way not only to bond with the kids but at the same time to teach them something that is essential to their future academic life.
