Re: Archiving Art?
Asked by katiepiatt
Question:
Archie (4) brings home on average 4 or 5 pieces of "art" a day from school. Great big folded pages, or things with bits stuck on etc. I hate throwing it away, but can't store
it all! Was considering perhaps scanning things in, or maybe laminating the best or storing things in a folder and dating them to see how he's progressed, but suspect I wouldn't stick to it.
What do other people do?
My Advice:
I bet all the art are master pieces too. lol.
Our kids were no exception when it came to volumes of the stuff and of all different sizes.
A lot of the time it came home in the form of scrap books, then there would be all the loose stuff and things made out of cereal boxes and the like. What little imaginations.
Most of all we would make sure that the art was put proudly on display for ALL to see...paintings on the fridge and larger stuff on the coffee table but as soon as the next master piece came home they replaced the older ones. Seeing that we enjoyed looking at their art seemed to inspire them to bring home even more, which I never saw as a bad thing.
Eventually all the paper stuff would go into a box and when full would be taped up and stored in the garage (where it still is) but most of the larger 3 dimensional stuff was used as toys and got broken along the way and therefore made it's way to the dump. Much of the smaller stuff also made it's way into boxes, was broken or is still on a shelf in our or someone else’s home. The good thing about families is there is usually someone that needs a well made present and YES...it can also be wrapped with some out dated art.
This process of accelerated art seems to lose speed nearly as fast as it started and steadies to a trickle in the years to come so you can relax just a little if you think it will take over your home. The most you have to deal with as they get older are a few certificates and reports. Having said that though, every time I walk into a home where multiple master pieces are on display I get a warm fuzzy feeling that I would not trade for the world.
We plan on getting the boxes out again once the kids turn 21 for a bit of a laugh...I can't wait but reckon the kids are dreading it...amazing how the tides will turn.
I do however like the idea of utilizing modern technology to store and transfer…but it’s not quite the same is it?
Let your kids be just that…KIDS. Show them that you are interested in all they do and if you look deep enough, you will see that much of what they do and say is all centered around their loving parents. Show them how to be proud of what they do.
