Sock Puppets
Making sock puppets is fun and teaches your child creativity, stories as well as basic home skills (sewing)
Now everyone I know has the bag of odd socks just sitting there, go thrrough it and find some cool socks. make it a great school holiday
activity.
now buttons, you can buy them everywhere from wollies to specialty shops like spotlight. depending on your budget go for what you can afford. Personally for things like this i tend to over spend on little things to make them look nice and my child feel as if they have chosen it all themself. but you also can buy a huge bag of buttons that are odd ones which is also good. I have a huge jar of them at home in my art cubbard.
now lay the sock out on the table, get your child to place the eyes. on a scrap bit of fabric show them how to sew a button. they are easy. for younger children you will have to help them as sewing needles are very sharp. DONT fuss if the eyes are not straight or even or in the right place. it is the childs art not yours. it is also a learning thing for a child.
For the mouth you can just use your hand and add a red felt slither for it or if the sock is white a red texter.
get the whole family in volved and have a story time after wards. its funny and amazing what a childs imagination can come up with.
