Weening a toddler from breastfeeding

ryastar2001 by ryastar2001 Walking(July 2008) (rank 500+)

It took me months to finally ween my daughter off the breast. I did it a little at a time so that I did not become engorged and to get her used to the idea that she was not going to be nursing anylonger.  By cutting out one feeding at

a time with several weeks in between each subtraction of a feeding I allowed my milk supply to naturally diminish without any pain or leakage.  After to last nursing I told my daughter that only babies nursed and that she was a toddler and not a baby so she wasn't allowed to nurse anymore. tankfully she accepted that explaination and stopped nursing with little or no fuss.

This is how I weaned my first too, at 12 months. I waited a week before I eliminated a feeding and this allowed for a very gradual weaning. Of course I felt extremely full within the first 24 hours, but it was not painful.

I think gradual weaning is the way to go.

Thanks for sharing this, its a good idea to wean your baby of slowly ortherwise you could get engorged or get mastitis.
